Ryanair expanded its capacity of no-frills cheap flights at Stansted Airport yesterday as the airline launched its inaugural flight to Agadir in Southern Morocco.
Flights will depart to the Moroccan holiday resort twice weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Ryanair also launched two new flight paths to the Canary Islands this week, with services running three times a week to Gran Canaria and Lanzarote.
While other airlines have reduced capacity in recent months, Ryanair has been prolific at opening new routes to take up the slack left by other carriers. Declining trade for Spanish holidays has seen wobbles in the market for key Canary Island destinations, but the Irish airline has plunged forward with its new flights.
Ryanair already offers four flights to Tenerife from Stansted, but the London hub will now boast 10 flights a week to Canary Islands taking passengers on their winter sun holidays.
Laura McCormack, Ryanair’s spokeswoman said: “Agadir offers all the charm of Morocco with fantastic beaches, excellent food and breathtaking scenery, while the volcanic Canary Islands have all the ingredients for a fantastic holiday from white dunes and crystal-clear waters,” reported TravelMole.com.
Whilst Ryanair were happy to expand its capacity at Stansted, the airline threatened to take away its considerable commercial power from Ireland’s Shannon airport. The continuing controversy surrounding the ?10 travel tax has prompted an ultimatum from Ryanair: abandon the tax or we will abandon Shannon airport.
“If the Government’s ?10 travel tax is not removed, then Ryanair will reduce its Shannon base by 75% to 1 based aircraft,” the airline threatened in a press statement.
