A survey of over 2500 UK adults has revealed that people from the North East of England spend the most amount of cash when on holiday, with those from Yorkshire spending the least – perhaps confirming the long held stereotype
Conflict Recovery Countries Key Future Tourism Hot Spots
War-torn countries may not be your first thought for a nice cheap holiday spot, but areas recovering from conflict are top of a list developed by travel journalist Simon Calder as holiday destinations of the future.
Tourism has always been a great way to generate revenue and bring foreign currency into a country in desperate need. The world is becoming a much smaller place as globalisation takes over and there are fewer great undiscovered spots for tourists to explore.
That void will be filled by zones that are currently shunned because of past conflicts but will increasingly turn to tourism in order to get economic activity moving again.
Historically we can look to countries such as Vietnam, Croatia and Cyprus. Vietnam was shackled by the bitter image it carried with the Americans since the Vietnam War. For that reason, western tourism to Vietnam has been largely stunted compared to neighbours like Thailand.
With the passage of time however, Vietnam is thriving, and is hailed as the hidden gem of the Far East. In the 70s the dispute between factions from Greece and Turkey over Cyprus lead to a division of the island, but now Cyprus holidays are a mainstay of the industry.
Mr Calder looked to the likes of Colombia, Mozambique and Zimbabwe as areas recovering from conflict that would benefit from tourism boosts in the near future. For too long, holidaymakers have stuck religiously to the North of Africa with holidays to Egypt and Tunisia. The delights of the south, with Mozambique’s glorious coastal areas and Zimbabwe’s national parks and Victoria Falls will be the hot spots of the future.
