The Big Island, Hawaii, is big indeed - larger than all of the other islands put together, but still only about 4000 square miles (Great Britain covers about 94,000 square miles). When embarking on your Hawaii holidays be sure to make time to come to visit Big Island, it’s the home of snowy Mauna Kea and steaming Mauna Loa. What are we talking about? Cocktails again?
Not cocktails - one of the world's most active volcanoes is here in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It’s had molten lava spewing out of it for more than a decade (no one seems to mind though) and then there’re five dormant volcanoes, one of which is Mauna Kea, (which means ‘white peak’) and with a volcanic peak of 13,796 feet, it’s rightly named as it’s covered in snow for part of the year. Mauna Loa means ‘long mountain’ incidentally.

From the coral reefs to the views of the night sky from Mauna Kea Observatory (the world’s largest) this is a remarkable place. You aren’t allowed to look through the observatory telescopes unfortunately, and are not allowed at the 14,000ft summit after dark. Spoil sports.
