Those cheeky aboriginal locals the Guanches used the caves to hide from the naughty pirates that once pillaged hither and thither all over the island. Naughty. There are miles of caves here, just over a mile of which is open to the public. It’s the cave system of its type in the world.

This is a volcanic crater filled with sea water that has been filtered through the black sand that separates the lagoon from the sea. Algae living in the water makes it appear green. Have a look; it’s a very alien landscape indeed. There’s a village next door where you can take a spot of tea too.
