Tips

The attractions of Lanzarote could not be more diverse. One day you could decide to not move from the sandy beaches, whilst the next you could be climbing up Fire Mountain or visiting a huge a Cactus garden. The opportunities that this fascinating island offers its visitors are rarely matched elsewhere so be prepared for a holiday of a lifetime. Much of this island has remained free from high rise buildings and other downsides of mass tourism so there is plenty of old world feel to explore and enjoy too.

Night Time Fun

  • The undisputed party capital of Lanzarote is Puerto del Carmen, where bars, clubs and restaurants are packed out with young revellers having a fabulous time in the sun

  • If you want to escape the tourists and enjoy a night with the locals, then head to the island’s capital city, Arrecife. Start off your evening in the Calle Jose Antonio area as this is where the islanders gather to start the night

  • If all this action sounds like your idea of hell, do not panic, as most of Lanzarote is more geared towards the quieter end of the scale. The likes of Costa Teguise offer up mouth-watering food so treat your taste buds of an evening

Explore the National Parks

  • Just like its neighbours, Lanzarote has a famous national park which shows the best of its unusual volcanic history

  • The landscape in Timanfaya National Park has to be seen to be believed, and is home to over 100 volcanoes, known locally as Fire Mountains.

  • Once you have seen the landscape, you will understand why it has been granted World Biosphere Reserve status by UNESCO

Black meets white sand

  • Lanzarote is rightly proud of its black sand beaches, which were created from the volcanic landscape it enjoys. But the impression people have is that it is only black sand Lanzarote has to offer. Try telling that to Playa Blanca, which literally translates as ‘white sand’

  • Puerto del Carmen is the biggest beach resort and it too has golden sand and plenty of traditional beach activities for all to enjoy

  • Fancy getting away from the crowds with your family or partner? Then the Papagayo Peninsula is the ideal place to do just this. The secluded beaches are to die for.

Hints & Tips

  • Lanzarote carnivals fall on or around Lent, so time your holiday right and you could experience some of the best street parties in the whole of Europe

  • Food lovers take note - Papas Arrugadas are wrinkly potatoes which are something of a local speciality, so make sure you try them when out and about in one of the local restaurants

  • Shopping is duty free in Lanzarote. You can choose whether to inform your other half about this or not depending on your views on shopping!
