Flights to Florence – The first paved city in Europe

Florence, in Italy, has always been a go-ahead kind of place. Take flights to Florence and you’ll discover a city of 370,000 strong, the first ever in Europe to pave its streets back in 1339. In 1339 the Brits were grubbing around in the woods covered in blue face paint, and London was a hell hole. The good old Grand Duchy of Tuscany was the first man in Italy to outlaw capital punishment, way head of his time in 1786. And Florence Nightingale was named after the city. Flights to Florence deposit you in another world where gracious ancient buildings hold sway and culture permeates everything. Gorgeous. Florence has two airports although most scheduled and charter traffic head for Galileo Galilei airport just outside nearby Pisa. Peretola airport, outside Florence itself, is much smaller.

Florence Flights – Fly into Pisa

Book flights to Florence Pisa airport and you’ll find frequent fast trains into the city centre, taking just an hour. The airport’s on the coast, just half a mile or so from Pisa centre and about 80km from Florence. Take the train, bag a window seat and while away the hour getting a visual grip on the surrounding countryside and suburbs. You’ll be dropped off at Santa Maria Novella railway station in Florence centre. Or you can grab a cab or a local transfer bus.

If you’re approaching from Bologna airport or heading back that way, you’ll find efficient shuttle buses from Bologna railway station. We think the best thing about flights to Florence is the city’s museums and galleries. Try these on for size; the Uffizi, the Accademia, the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, Museo di Santa Maria Novella, Museo di San Marco, Museo Archeologico, Museo Horne and Museo Bardine. That’s only about half of them.

Flights to Florence – Gay friendly and flamboyant

Masses of airlines run flights to Florence and it is easy to get to from all over the UK. Many visitors particularly enjoy the city’s laid back and tolerant feel. The place is jam packed with live music, theatres, performance, night clubs and a loads of excellent gay and lesbian venues. If you want to know more they’re very helpful down at the tourist office on the Via Cavour. Alternatively  track down a copy of the city’s monthly listings magazine, Firenze Spettacolo.
