Dublin, to people who like buildings, is a Regency gem. Just off the main streets you’ll find hotels galore. Many hotels in Dublin are tall, thin, beautifully proportioned regency terraced houses and mansions. Head out into the ‘burbs in any direction and you’ll run into streets’ worth of cosy, friendly B&Bs and Guest Houses, all very good value for your Euro. The 3 star Harcourt Hotel is a visual treat, an elegant Georgian townhouse close by St. Stephens Green, Grafton Street and Temple Bar. Like many of the larger hotels in Dublin the Harcourt has a bar, a heated beer garden (we understand the garden is heated, not the beer!) and its own restaurant, Little Caesars.

Popular with hen parties, stag parties. Immigrants from Eastern Europe Asia and Africa contribute to the Irish way of life with cuisine, aesthetics, and culture. We love Dublin Port Tunnel, the biggest civil engineering project in Ireland… ever. How’s this for a monster? More than 5000 people have worked on the project, investing over 7.5 million man hours to build the longest urban road tunnel in the EU. Book flights to Dublin and take a quick detour to explore this feat of ingenuity and engineering. Two million tonnes of rock and clay shifted bit by bit to create a massive great hole seven storeys below the ground, hacked heroically out of limestone. Hats off to them. We get exhausted just digging the garden.

Unsurprisingly it is Eire’s busiest airport as well as being in the top ten busiest EU airports. Flights to Dublin are a pleasure – the people really are very friendly there. Imagine being nice to around 60,000 passengers on a normal day, twenty thousand a day more during the peak season. Phew. They handle over 600 planes a day spread over 85 or so airlines, 24/7, 364 (they’re only closed on Christmas Day!) and more than 23 million passengers a year.

Dublin Attractions

The Book of Kells a detailed illuminated manuscripx dating from around AD 800 is one of Dublin’s prime attractions. It is displayed in the East pavilion of the Colonnades.

There are several theatres in Dublin. The most interesting and famous being The Abbey Theatre, having had and still has, the best playwrights, actors and directors who queue up to work there, according to beatthebrochure.

The Dublin writers’ museum north of the river represents the city’s literary tradition with displays about writers such as Joyce, Swift, Yeats, Wilde, Beckett and others.

The Dublin atmosphere makes every sight intriguing. Stop by The Christ Church Cathedral, The National Gallery. Dublin City Gallery on the north side in Parnell Square, has works by French Impressionist Painters and 20 century Irish artists. Kilmainham Gaol was the place of mass executions during Ireland’s struggle for independence. An audiovisual introduction is well worth a listen. Catch a bus from Aston Quay to get there.

Boat

There are two direct services from Holyhead on the North Western tip of Wales. One from Holyhead on the North Western tip of Wales and the other to Dun Laoghaire. Boats sail from Liverpool direct to Dublin and from Douglas on the Isle of Man.

Bus

At Bus Eireann’s central bus station north of the Liffey on Store St is Buras

Bus to Belfast, Cork, Galway, and Rosslare Harbour.

Train
