Barcelona is probably best known for Gaudi’s omnipresent mosaics, a joyful outpouring of shape, pattern, colour and texture. The Museum of Art and the CCCB next door are both fantastic entertainment if you’re into history and art, and each has a wonderful schedule of monthly exhibitions. The Picasso and Dali exhibitions in the Gothic Quarter offer wonderful eye candy. If I was a cat burglar with nerves of steel I’d break in and nick myself a Picasso for the front room. But I’m not, so I won’t. As central hotels in Barcelona go, this is a little gem. The 3 star Hotel Gran Ronda is set up to offer top class service and a friendly welcome, with elegant modern décor and great big rooms makes it a great base. And you won’t believe the crystal dome that covers the lift. ‘Bling’ comes nowhere near describing its splendour!

This city is famed for superb food and many hotels in Barcelona have in-hotel restaurants serving food fit for kings. Everything from international cuisine to traditional Catalan dishes, tapas and seafood. The tapas is particularly good in the quaint fishing villages around Barcelona and you’ll find eating out good value for money. The Cram Hotel’s restaurant has a 1 star Michelin rating, so head there for superb eats. Like many hotels in Barcelona this one is gorgeous, stately and old. But… surprise! They’ve kept the original façade but turned the inside into an explosion in a Star Trek factory. Not really - it’s absolutely gorgeous, just a bit of a shock to the system at first glance!

If football’s your thing you’ll know that FC Barcelona’s stadium is the biggest privately owned footie stadium in the world, with room for a frightening 100,000 roaring fans. Where do you start? Walk along Las Ramblas , Laugh in Spain’s best street with street artists, news kiosks,vendors. Relish foodie heaven.in Barri and Riberia. Walk West, put your feet up on a funky café table in the El Ravel district. Knock back a glass of Madeira m’dear in a cool bar then hit the shops. Architecture to blow you away would be Gaudi’s genius work in progress, La Sagrada Familia. Thrill to his charming La Pedrera. Draw breath in the Gracia District at his stunning collection of mosaic and tiled buildings, the Parc Guell. Never mind if you’ve never looked at modern art before. Dive into the Museu d’ Art Contemporani de Barcelona, to see its great contemporary collection.

Barcelona’s biggest festival is a city party called La Merce on 24 September.

Another important date is Sant Joan (St John’s Day 23 July when firecrackers are let off as summer is welcomed in. June and July sees the El Grec arts festival all over Barcelona with music, plays, dance and fun.
