Hotels in North Carolina – Steamin’ and rollin’

Fans of ‘70s train drama series Casey Jones will get a kick out of North Carolina. The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad runs all year round on a spectacular journey through the dramatic and wild countryside. Hotels in North Carolina mirror those in all US states with everything from fairly grim Motels and roadside crash pads to glitzy, spotless edifices.

At the larger end of hotels in North Carolina there’s the 374 room four Omni Charlotte Hotel. If you’d like to experience North Carolina’s famously warm hospitality, try the Omni. Luxurious and convenient, this North Carolina hotel is right in the middle of Charlotte’s business and financial district. They do great food too.

North Carolina Hotels – Meet the natives

A ‘historical’ building (100 years old) is home to the fascinating Frisco Native American Museum and Natural History Centre. Choose a hotel in North Carolina and visit this wonderful place packed with ancient (and not so ancient) artefacts made by the local native red Indians. The 3 star Best Western a familiar brand name in the UK, is in Charlotte, just minutes from the airport and, as North Carolina hotels go, an extremely convenient base from which to explore the state. For some genuine, rowdy local fun head for Lowe's Motor Speedway.

Hotels in North Carolina – Home of John Coltrane

John Coltrane, genius jazz man, composer, band leader and ace saxophonist was born in a little place called Hamlet. And Hollywood superstar Ava Gardner was born here too, back in 1922, in Brogden. Low cost hotels in North Carolina are easy to find. Try the 3 star Comfort Inn RTP in Chapel Hill, Durham and close to good shopping at Southpoint Mall plus loads of bars and restaurants. A chilled, friendly place with 99 immaculately clean rooms and really good value for money.

North Carolina Holidays -  Plenty of Attractions

From the misty mountains to the sunny coast, North Carolina holidays offer natural beauty, history, arts, culture and adventure – something for everyone. In the mountains you can surround yourself with scenery and spend your time picnicking, hiking, or even white water rafting, for which some sort of hat might be in order. In the winter this is skiing country, or snowboards if you’re cool. There are 600 internationally well-regarded golf courses.

Holidays to North Carolina - Lots of American History

The North Carolina holiday coast is known to be a place rich in history and thick with stories of pirates, battles, and sunken ships. Visit historic Beaufort and walk the streets where Blackbeard himself once strolled, view artefacts from his pirate ship the Queen Anne's Revenge, or have lunch at one of the great restaurants on the downtown waterfront.

Most importantly of all of course, North Carolina is the location of the first successful sustained powered flight, by the Wright brothers of course, in 1903. There’s a 60 ft granite monument perched atop Kill Devil Hill, for this is where it all happened. A visit should include touring the museum exhibits, touring the reconstructed camp buildings and first flight trail area, and a climb up Kill Devil Hill to view the memorial pylon. It’s only 90ft high, go on, you can do it. North Carolina holidays offer the opportunity to emerse yourself in the landscape and culture of the Deep South.

Flights to North Carolina – Official blue berry? The blueberry!

North Carolina has the honour of including the highest mountain east of the Mississippi, Mount Mitchell. If you’re booking flights to North Carolina with adventures in mind, try climbing it and see what the State looks like from a long way up. Watch your back though… the first ever English settlement was created in North Carolina but no one knows what happened to it. They just… disappeared. (Here, we pause for on of those sinister tumbleweed moments).

Flights to North Carolina will probably deposit you at one of two major international airports. Charolotte-Douglas International Airport is, unsurprisingly, just a few miles outside Charlotte. Raleigh-Durham International Airport is ten miles or so south east of Durham, also convenient for nearby Raleigh.

North Carolina Flights – Official carnivorous plant?

They’re funny over in the US. We’re familiar with American culture to a certain extent through TV but, all the same, much of it is weirdly foreign and unfamiliar. They’re obsessed with state symbols; flights to North Carolina land you in the State whose official blue berry is the blueberry. No, really! Their official state red berry is the strawberry. These decisions aren’t taken lightly and are ratified by the General Assembly… no joke.

But there’s more. Take flights to North Carolina if you fancy a holiday in a state that has officially adopted milk as its ‘State Beverage’. They’ve adopted a State Historical Boat; the shad boat, whatever that might be. And in a final defiant attempt to out-silly the rest of the US they took on the Venus flytrap. Why? Obvious… it’s the Official Carnivorous Plant of North Carolina. Doh, of course.

Flights to North Carolina – The USA’s tallest brick lighthouse

Choose flights to North Carolina and marvel at the Hatteras Lighthouse, the tallest brick built lighthouse in the USA. Or celebrate the birth of teeth rotting, hyper-making Pepsi Cola, invented in North Carolina in the late 1800s. They should have let it lie. Weirdest of all, North Carolina was named after our King Charles the first. Eh? We’re probably being dim but fail to see what ‘Carolina’ has to do with ‘Charles’.

Visit the home of Pepsi Cola. Book your flights to North Carolina here.

Biltmore Estate - North Carolina Attractions

America’s largest privately owned home, the Biltmore House, is nestled among 8,000 acres in the mountains near Asheville. George Vanderbilt saw his 250-room French-Renaissance chateau completed in 1895. This National Historic Landmark is among the country’s most visited historic houses and has shops, a four-star hotel, gardens, walking trails and an award-winning winery. A winery is a winemaking facility by the way, in case you were wondering.

Blue Ridge Parkway - Attractions in North Carolina

The Blue Ridge Parkway, nicknamed ‘America’s Favourite Drive,’ is a 469 mile scenic route connecting the Great Smoky Mountains and Shenandoah National Parks. North Carolina is home to 252 miles of Parkway, which goes through two national forests and countless lovely viewpoints

Cherokee Indian Reservation -  North Carolina Attractions

Homeland of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians, the Cherokee Indian reservation welcomes thousands of visitors each year. Popular attractions include Harrah’s Cherokee Casino. Yep, you heard about it on The Simpsons, this is a real ‘Indian Casino’. In 1987 the U.S. Supreme Court decided that Native American tribes could operate casinos free of state regulation. More North Carolina holiday family-friendly are the Museum of the Cherokee, and Oconaluftee Indian Village.

Wright Brothers National Memorial -  Attractions in North Carolina

The site of man’s first powered flight by Wilbur and Orville Wright in 1903, (Orville at the controls) the Wright Brothers National Memorial is located in Kill Devil Hills on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. The memorial is a 60ft granite pylon. There’s a reconstructed hangar and daily presentations on the Wright brothers’ historic first flight. Little or no mention of the Wright sister though. She ran the bicycle shop when they were doing their thing with powered flight and did it very well too. Better then them. Without her they’d have been stuffed.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park -  North Carolina Attractions

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the largest protected land area east of the Rocky Mountains and the most visited national park in the United States. Although it spans across two states, the majority of the park lies within North Carolina. There’s 276,000 acres of forest. To put that in proportion, Hyde Park is about 350 acres, so allow about five years to thoroughly explore. There are rivers, streams and lakes that offer some of the best canoeing, kayaking and white water rafting in the USA

North Carolina Attractions Museum of Life and Science

Located in Durham, the North Carolina Museum of Life and Science is a 78 acre interactive science and technology centre that mixes science and fun. Interactive exhibits explore topics such as weather, aerospace and geology. Visitors can embark on a train ride through a nature park and wander through a 5,000 sq ft glass conservatory filled with over 1,000 free-range tropical butterflies. We advise that before you buy your ticket you check they haven’t had a last minute change of plan and filled the conservatory with 1,000 tropical spiders. It’s unlikely, but you never know.

North Carolina Zoo

One of the world’s largest and finest walk-through natural-habitat zoos, the North Carolina Zoo features more than 1,100 animals from 250 species as well as thousands of rare plants spread over 500 acres in Asheboro in central North Carolina.

The 37 acre African Plains exhibit alone is bigger than all of London zoo and it comprises less than a tenth of this zoo overall!

Flying into a hub airport in the USA, such as Dallas, you’ll be about one and a half hour’s flight from North Carolina/North Kentucky Airport.
