Poor New Orleans, flooded and broken and dispirited? No - surprisingly it’s still a wonderful holiday destination and not all hotels in New Orleans were washed away. Far from it. Jazz echoes from every street corner downtown and some of the hotels in New Orleans are genuinely quite old, built in the early 1800s.

The Ambassador Hotel is in the funky Warehouse arts area downtown. Just a few metres from the city’s best art galleries and restaurants and convenient for all the attractions. They like their gambling here and you’ll enjoy nearby Harrah’s Casino if you’re up for a flutter. And it is right near the Aquarium of the Americas, the amazing IMAX Theatre and the French Quarter

New Orleans Hotels – A bloody history

We love that pale green mossy vine stuff that hangs all over the vegetation in New Orleans. It is a gentle city with a bloody history, originally a bastion of the French. Southern ladies and gentlemen might be a 20^th century cliché but manners here are immaculate and the locals running hotels in New Orleans will give you a warm and charming welcome. We like the Garden District Hotel, set in the delightfully pretty Garden District. A couple of miles from the French Quarter and Bourbon Street, near the beautiful Audubon Park and within hailing distance of the Zoo.

New Orleans Holidays - Great for Jazz Clubs and Carnivals

From the many jazz clubs, bars, and cafés to the unnerving interest in Voodoo, there’s a lot of culture on New Orleans holidays and if neither of those appeal, how about the parks, historic buildings, and the streetcars (trams to you and I). Not going to be on your holiday in New Orleans in time for the annual Mardi Gras Carnival, which starts on January the 6th? (yes!? Twelfth Night!) Then go to the Mardi Gras museum and get your picture next to King Kong or Marilyn Monroe or any of the other marvellous props from this spirited event.

Holidays in New Orleans - Fully Recovered

Your first concerns, being a sensitive global traveller might well involve wondering whether a holiday to New Orleans is either appropriate or safe right now. It was August 2005 when Hurricane Katrina picked up New Orleans and threw it into the news headlines. It wasn’t just the storm damage that made the news though, but the struggle the city had coping with the aftermath of the flooding that covered around 75 per cent of New Orleans.

The locals were very quick to return to a city they love a lot, and the French Quarter of New Orleans was pretty much untouched anyway. You won’t find much patience for anyone with a negative attitude about the city, instead you’ll be the recipient of a warm welcome synonomous with a Deep South holiday and you’ll have a fantastic time! Everywhere is open now and there aren’t any curfews. So some tourists are staying away because they think the city is still underwater, good! You’ll not have to queue so long in the restaurants then. Go to New Orleans now! And yes, there is a tour of the worst hit areas. It’s tastefully done and you won’t be allowed off the bus to take pictures. It’s been set up to help gather support to rebuild New Orleans.

New Orleans Holidays - A Great Place for children

Yes, they do love children here, so there’s no reason not to bring your own. There are loads of things to do with them too! Aquarium of the Americas is here and is rated as one of the best in the US. Audubon Zoo is also highly regarded and has a train going round it to all the best bits. The zoo and the aquarium did get a whack from Katrina, but are now reopened. There’s an amusement park called Six Flags, should your children still be fuming about not being in Disneyland. There are lots of great trips and tours to take too whilst on holiday in New Orleans, cover the plantations out of town, or go on a movie location tour and see where bits of JFK, or The Big Easy (not really a child friendly film!) were shot.

Oh yes, New Orleans itself is often referred to as ‘The Big Easy’ because people here like to take it easy. It’s as simple as that!

Flights to New Orleans – Only ten feet or so above water level

New Orleans dates back to 1718, founded by a chap called Jean Baptiste La Moyne Sieur de Bienville. What a mouthful. We wonder why he chose this spot… OK, it was a great crossroads for trade, accessible to ships on the east bank of the Mississippi. But the site was – and is – swampy, marshy and generally soggy, only just above sea level. Flights to New Orleans deposit you in a place that’s only about ten feet or so above the water table at the best of times. As the city grew it followed the river’s curve so came to be known as The Crescent City. The bigger it got, the more defences the city needed to keep the river at bay. Hence the complex system of levees designed to protect it against flooding.

New Orleans Flights – Louis Armstrong airport

Flights to New Orleans land you at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, ten miles or so west of the city centre. They’ve been busy renovating the airport recently so you’ll enjoy all sorts of useful stuff to make life more comfortable and less boring while you’re there. There’s free Wi-Fi access so you can always while away your time buying pointless things on ebay or surfing the net. If you’ve hired a car take the I-10 and follow the signs. Many visitors take flights to New Orleans, AKA The Big Easy, to track down some really good jazz. Why ‘Big Easy’? It’s the name of the city’s infamous early twentieth century dance hall.

Flights to New Orleans – Zoos, museums, jazz and soul food

You’ll find visitor information services in the West Lobby, West Terminal and East Baggage Claim areas of New Orleans airport. Choose flights to New Orleans for a huge choice of attractions and things to do: zoos, museums, art galleries and even a version of Madam Tussauds, the Musee Conti Wax Museum. Visit in February for the Mardi Gras, or anytime for a trip on the Natchez Steamboat. The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival kicks off in April every year. And there are theatres, riverfront parks, swamp tours, Marie Laveau’s House of Voodoo and, of course, shed loads of casinos.

Audubon Zoo – New Orleans Attractions

One of the USA’s top zoos, Audubon Zoo blends the exotic excitement of animals from around the globe with the lush gardens. When beatthebrochure visits zoos abroad, especially zoos in the places where many of the creatures we see in UK zoos come from, we’re always disappointed not to see badgers, moles, and foxes sitting timidly and nervously in the hot sun. We’re delighted to announce that Audubon Zoo in New Orleans proves no excepxion. It has innovative natural habitat exhibits and an animal collection ranging from rare white alligators to the Bengal Tigers for you. Not a dormouse in sight.

The French Quarter – Attractions in New Orleans

While it suffered wind damage thanks to Katrina, there was thankfully no significant flooding in this historic part of New Orleans. It’s not entirely French, more a mixture of French, Spanish, Cajun, and Creole influences. Oh yes, you’ll need to know this:

• Cajun: A native of Louisiana of French Arcadian ancestry or Cajun cooking is a combination of French and Southern cuisine.

• Creole: a person with French ancestors, especially in Louisiana, or the tomatoes, green peppers, spicy seasonings and more, which means you’re eating in New Orleans!

The National D-Day Museum – New Orleans Attractions

Also in the French Quarter of New Orleans, this is well worth visiting as there are great exhibits and events that commemorate the second world war, which America eventually noticed was on a few years after it started.

Tombs and Voodoo – Attractions in New Orleans

Visit the cemeteries of New Orleans and see the spooky above-ground tombs. You can take a Voodoo tour in New Orleans, which includes a walking tour of the French Quarter, with a little lagniappe for everyone. Lagniappe is a Creole word that means ‘a little something extra’, come on, keep up!

Riverboats – New Orleans Attractions

Get to the Zoo and Aquarium in style by travelling seven miles up the Mississippi on a real steam riverboat. The aquarium lost thousands of fish in hurricane Katrina and the resulting flood of New Orleans, it’s reopened now so go and support it’s regeneration on a steamboat!

Bourbon Street – Attractions in New Orleans

Culture, history, music, and a little bit of Voodoo thrown in! Expect the unexpected and have a drink on the way to prepare yourself. Once visited never forgotten though. Go at night, when it’s not the best time to be there with children of course, but don’t let that put you off New Orleans as it’s a great place for a good value family holiday they won’t ever forget! Disneyland? Go there next year!

The most cost effective way will involve a change of aircraft and probably airline in the US, often at Chicago O’Hare Airport, for your connecting flight to Louis Armstrong Airport. Yes – it really is called Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport.

There are some direct flights from Manchester in the UK (as opposed to Manchester, Boston, USA) and that getting on the aircraft at Manchester Bernard Manning Airport* and getting off at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport contrast would be unbeatable!

The flight time from the UK to New Orleans is approximately 14 hours.

*Apparently after some debate Manchester Airport opted NOT to change its name to reflect this particular local cousin.
