Hotels in Memphis – Music pilgrimages

How many songs can you think of that include Memphis? We’ve got five so far. Memphis is a pilgrimage for blues lovers; WC Handy wrote down the first ever original blues tune on paper here. Stay in hotels in Memphis and you’ll also feel the country music connection. Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash (toe the line, folks!) all put their genius on vinyl at Sun Records, now a museum.

The Peabody Memphis is one of the best known hotels in Memphis, in so-called Blues City. A big four star, triple A four diamond place (pricey too) and historic in the American sense. In other words, not very historic at all. All the same, the amazing location makes it stand out amongst hotels in Memphis; a bock or so from Beale Street, the Rock & Soul Museum and guitar lovers’ Mecca, the Gibson factory.

Memphis Hotels – See Elvis on the moon through a big telescope

We lied. There’s no big telescope on the moon and as far as we know, Elvis isn’t there. Didn’t someone say he was on Mars? My neighbour thinks Elvis is in his shed. As you’d expect many Memphis hotels are teeming with Elvi (the plural of Elvis?) in all shapes, colours and sizes so watch your back.

Actually if you don’t like Elvis, don’t go there. It really is a bit much. If you love the chubby old rogue, stay in hotels in Memphis where Elvis is still king. You can even book in at the Elvis Presley's Heartbreak Hotel, an allegedly fashionable but probably over-Elvissed boutique hotel. Great hospitality, though. It is close to Gracelands too if you’re in Elvis overdrive.

Hotels in Memphis – More sun than Miami

We’re not going to mention Elvis any more. There’s more to hotels in Memphis than The King. This city enjoys more sunny days a year than Miami. The locals make mouth watering BBQ ribs the size of dinosaur bones. And there are loads of really classy art galleries and lively nightlife. For city centre culture and fun try the midtown arts district.

The Artisan Hotel Memphis doubles as an art gallery and there are some wonderful artworks to peruse. They’ve got a fab pool and a sociable lounge and cafe. Hotels in Memphis: do they come Elvis-free? Yes, many do. But not this one. They’ve got an Elvis Presley suite where he used to play. Doh. So much for not mentioning the ‘E’ word.

Memphis Holidays  -  The Home of Elvis!

There’s no where on earth quite like Memphis – that’s the official line anyway. Is it true? Let’s have a look at what the so-called birthplace of rock and roll has going for it then. From Mud Island River Park where you can canoe, kayak, or airboat around the mighty Mississippi to The Cotton Museum where you can learn the story of the cotton industry and its influences on daily life, the arts, and the development of Memphis. From the 96 acre Botanic Garden to five star French restaurants, to Heartbreak Hotel, and, of course, Graceland itself. An an essential stop in any Deep South holiday, Memphis holidays have a wealth of authentic US history to sample.

Flights to Memphis – Home of MGM’s roaring lion

You know that lion from the beginning of old MGM films? He lived at Memphis Zoo. Flights to Memphis also deliver you into the Pork Barbeque Capital of the world. Blimey. On the bright side, the city is the only one in the US to win the cleanest city award five times. Oh dear. Can you tell that we’re desperately trying to avoid mentioning Elvis?

Flights to Memphis land at Memphis International Airport, 8 miles south of the city. Once you’re on land, getting around is easy. Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Thrifty all offer good value car hire and you can even get your car hire company to pick you up.

Memphis Flights – An ancient native Indian settlement

Choose flights to Memphis if you want to visit the 18th biggest city in the US, once home to a thriving native Indian settlement. Out on the Bluffs of Memphis there are signs of long occupation. Memphis sits at the widest part of the Mississippi River and was named after its Egyptian namesake on the banks of the Nile.

The name Memphis actually means ‘established and beautiful, which we like. Take flights to Memphis and head off into Tennessee. Catch a public bus outside Terminal C; the number 32 bus will take you into downtown Memphis. Or pre-book a shuttle bus to out of town destinations.

Flights to Memphis – Birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll

If you’re a rock and roll fan you can worship at Sun Studio, birthplace of the genre on Union Avenue not far from downtown Memphis. Apparently the city is mentioned in more than 400 songs, so flights to Memphis inevitably lead to music one way or another.

If you fancy a bit of peace head for a park and chill; the city has over 7,000 acres of delightful parks to lose yourself in. OK, we give up… we’re going to have to mention Elvis. Take flights to Memphis and no sooner are you off your ‘plane than you run into an Elvis-themed gift shop packed with licensed Elvis paraphernalia.

Beale Street Historic District – Memphis Attractions

Nightclubs and restaurants offer food and live music including traditional blues, rhythm and blues, jazz, and rock' and roll. The famous street also features a statue of W.C. Handy, a musical ‘Walk of Fame,’ and Church Park, built by the South's first Black millionaire, Robert Church. Visit the store: ‘A. Schwab's Dry Goods’ – it’s been a mainstay on the street since 1876, and that’s a long time in the USA. It stocks everything from Voodoo potions to ties.

Alex Haley Museum – Attractions in Memphis

Alex Haley is best known as the author of the novel Roots from which the television series of the same name was adapxed. The novel is based on Haley's own family. Roots was shown in the US in 1977 and its phenomenal success surprised the ABC TV network, which had elected to show the whole series in a week, thinking not many people would be interested. 1977 that was again, just in case you thought we said 1957.

Built by Haley’s grandfather in the years around 1920 the house has been restored to how it would have been when Alex was born and would have sat on the porch listening to the stories his family would tell about his relatives and their struggles for respect and freedom. Well worth the 35 mile trip to the north of Memphis.

Graceland – Memphis Attractions

Come on then, let’s go to Graceland. You can’t be this close and not have a mooch round. It might even make an Elvis fan out of you, if you’re not already of course! You don’t have to be an Elvis fan though (it’s not like The Country Music Hall of Fame – really, if you aren’t a country music mega-fan DON’T GO THERE) how many times to you get to see what it’s like inside a rock star’s private jet? And not just any rock star either, the KING of rock and roll! The jungle room, mirrored basement ceilings, frankly massive collection of gold and platinum records, 18 mile wide sofa (okay, it’s 18 feet wide), there’s loads to see here. Do NOT miss it!

Rock and Soul Museum – Attractions in Memphis

Been to Graceland? Good, now stay on the beat and track to the Rock and Soul Museum, which is on Beale Street. This Memphis museum houses an exhibition about the birth of rock and soul music. Come here and learn the story of musical pioneers who overcame racial barriers to create music that shook the world.

Get the Memphis music experience all the way, from the rural sharecroppers of the 1930s, through to the explosion of Sun, Stax, and Hi Records and the Memphis’ musical heyday in the 1970s. The museum’s digital audio tour guide is packed with over 300 minutes of information, including over 100 songs, that you at your own pace through seven galleries featuring instruments, costumes and other musical treasures.
Although something of a hub itself, you can’t currently fly direct to Memphis so expect to pick up a connecting flight once you land in the US. The airport is just 8 miles out of town. Heathrow, for reference, is about 15 miles from Central London
