Hotels in New York – Skyscraper to brownstone to motel

There’s no point telling you what’s on offer in New York. Unless you’ve been living in a cave for the last two hundred years you’ll know all about the Empire State Building, the shopping in Manhattan and Central Park, unnaturally square amongst the grey skyscrapers. Hotels in New York? There are thousands and thousands. Before I got old enough to know better I thought New York was full of cowboys and Indians. It isn’t – I was so disappointed – but you do see some odd goings on there.

A friend of ours was walking in NY late one night and came across an English bloke rustling along, dressed from head to toe in aluminium foil. It takes all sorts. As household name hotels in New York go, the Comfort Inn Central Park West is as good as any. It is undeniably butt ugly from the outside but very nice indoors.

New York Hotels – A murder on every corner… not!

CSI fans might expect a murder on every corner and Mac on tap if things go pear shaped. New York isn’t full of gun toting loonies, but some people do carry guns. The police do. Decades of American junk TV should have made guns seem normal, but it hasn’t. New York hotels are as safe as those in any big city. Low cost 2 star hotels in New York include the Wolcott Hotel, a handsome Victorian pile near Times Square that offers and good value alternative to the hideously posh Manhattan hotels nearby.

Hotels in New York – Short on sky, long on style

It is weird not being able to see the sky without craning your neck. New Yorkers must have evolved a special ability to look up without getting dizzy. When you do see it, it’s just a little blue box surrounded by monolithic buildings. Freaky. Many hotels in New York are skyscrapers so you might find yourself waking up in the clouds, literally. Want to book a special treat? Some of the hotels in New York are packed with style and panache. Try the Hudson Hotel near Central Park, one of those uber cool ‘lifestyle’ hotels that’ll make you either feel like a millionaire or an imposter.

Flights to New YorkNew York State and NYC

You probably already know that New York’s State as well as a city. Flights to New York give you access to so much exciting stuff that you probably won’t know where to start. You could easily spend two weeks shopping in Manhattan but if you’re there for more than retail therapy, you’ll have great fun too.

More than six million people visit Niagara Falls every year so it’s a bit of a crush. But spectacular. If you like curiosities, you’ll appreciate the Genesee River, one of only a handful worldwide that flows south to north. Why do they usually go the other way then? Something to Google in an idle moment… Flights to New York State also deposit you in the home of the US’s oldest cattle ranch, started in 1747. We wonder what cowboys wore in those days. Tights, perhaps?

New York Flights – Named after jazz musicians’ slang

New York has three main airports handling tens of millions of visitors a year. JFK (John F Kennedy) Airport is in the Queens are of New York City on the Van Wyck Expressway. JFK mostly handles international traffic so there’s a good chance your flights to New York will land you here.

LaGuardia airport is in Queens too, but on the Grand Central Parkway. It deals mostly with internal flights. Newark airport in New Jersey has domestic and international flights covered and, because it is further out of New York City, it isn’t nearly as manic. We’ve always wondered why NY is called The Big Apple. Apparently ‘Apple’ was jazz musician slang for a city in the ‘30s, and flights to New York still provide loads of opportunities to hear excellent quality jazz.

Flights to New York – Loo roll was invented here

Not many people know that Joseph Gayetty, a New Yorker, invented loo paper way back in 1857. What on earth did people do before that? Actually, we don’t really want to know. Morbid by nature? Choose fights to New York and visit Hartsdale Pet Cemetery, a vast place with room for 12000 furry friends.

Or cram yourself bodily into the world’s smallest church if you’re so inclined… three and a half by six feet of Christian silliness in Oneida. Useful tip: There have been taxi scams at JFK airport so if your flights to New York are heading there, book your cab at the airport desk and ignore the touts.
