Los Angeles’ real name is ‘El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de Los Angeles de Porciuncula’. What a mouthful. It’s just as bad in English, translating as ‘The Town of Our Lady, the Queen of the Angels’. Blimey. Flights to Los Angeles deposit you in a very strange place. OK, in the UK we’re used to cars. Most of us drive and some of us have more than one car each. But this is ridiculous.
Apparently almost a quarter of Los Angeles’ land area is covered with cars. In fact there are more cars than people in this pedestrian-intolerant city. These people’s bums are completely welded to their vehicles.

The 1800s gold rush swelled the city with hungry, greedy prospectors and Los Angeles finally became a city in 1876.
