Flights to Las Vegas – Gamble and get married all at once

Las Vegas translates to ‘The Meadows’ but it isn’t particularly meadow. Far from it. We suppose whoever named it was either feeling nostalgic or indulging in some serious wishful thinking. Hot, dry and dusty during the day. Cold, dry and dusty at night. Most people take flights to Las Vegas for the casinos or to get married. There’s not much else to do there in all honesty, and as soon as you leave the glitzy bits behind the city reveals itself as horribly tatty and poverty stricken. Flights to Las Vegas land you at McCarran International Airport, a two terminal monster with a third on the way due 2011.

Fly over Las Vegas – Desert landscapes and city lights

Flights to Las Vegas bring Elvis to mind. The poor man did a ridiculous 837 shows in a row at the Las Vegas Hilton Casino. He must have been so fed up and bored, trundling out the same old stuff night after night. No wonder he resorted to cheeseburgers. Perhaps if he’d taken himself off to the nearby Nevada Mountains for some exercise he’d still be here. Adventurous types choose flights to Las Vegas because of the hiking and climbing, cumulating in the 13,000 foot high Boundary Peak. Stunning views over a stunningly bleak landscape. Other people just head for the slot machines. Las Vegas has its eccentricities and US state and county law is often hilariously silly. If you buy a drink for more than three people in Nyala you’ll be in trouble. Kiss in public in Eureka and you risk a night in jail.

Las Vegas Flights – A 27 million dollar jackpot

The world's biggest jackpot was won in Las Vegas where, in 1998, a local woman netted a fantastic 27 million dollars in one go. Wow. No wonder flights to Las Vegas are popular. The airport is only a mile from Las Vegas’s famous Strip, which looks OK at night but fairly grubby and poor by day. Money doesn’t necessarily mean taste and the casinos are unbelievably tacky. Nevada is the biggest producer of gold in the world next to South Africa and the extraordinarily tarty Golden Nugget Hotel is home to the world's biggest ever gold nugget, all sixty pounds of it. Las Vegas? Great fun as long as you can forget the aesthetics.
