Hotels in Maui – 10,000 Humpbacked whales

Choose hotels in Maui if you’re keen on wildlife… and sea life. Between December and April Maui is home to around 10,000 over wintering hump backed whales fresh from their summer home off Alaska. Magnificent, massive, completely harmless and a breathtaking sight. All the hotels in Maui will be able to give you details of whale watching tours. Watch whales by boat or from the shore. A major conservation success, the hump backed whale is no longer in dire danger. Hotels in Maui? You’ll find a really good choice of accommodation from scarily expensive 5 star resorts like the Diamond, low cost B&Bs and Guest Houses, cottages to rent by the beach and mid-priced family friendly hotels.

Maui Hotels – Shop ‘til you drop

Hotels in Maui tend towards being family friendly – the Hawaiians love children – and many offer low rates for families plus traditional ‘keiki’, activities for the kids. Maui hotels include the lovely Ala Aina Ocean Vista, a very romantic B&B in Kipahulu set in four acres of super-lush gardens with marvellous sea views. From there, it’ only a short walk to the beautiful seven Sacred Pools.

Flights to Maui – 730 square miles of eye candy

Maui is Hawaii’s second biggest Island, almost fifty miles long and twenty six wide. Like all the Hawaiian islands Maui has a nickname, The Valley Isle. No surprise, then, that it is made up of a series of dramatically beautiful valleys. Flights to Maui land you at Kahului airport in the island’s central valley. There’s a smaller airport at Kapalua and an inter-island commuter airport at Hana, in the east. You’ll take flights to Maui for all of the island’s main resorts; Kaanapali, Kapalua, Makena, Wailea, Hana, Kihei, Maalaea, Napili and Honokowai. For shopping and a taste of civilisation, head for Maui’s three biggest towns, pretty Kahului, lovely Wailuku and delightful Lahaina.

Maui Flights – Splurge on a helicopter

Kahului Airport is in the north of the island, just three miles or so from Kahului village. Choose flights to Kahului and you’ll have a great choice of pre-arranged tours and adventures, most of which you’ll find out about at the airport. Car rental is good value, recommended for exploring the whole of the island. You can hire a helicopter flight if you’ve got a few quid spare and see Hawaii from the air – a breathtaking sight. Plenty of companies offer really good guided tours and days out exploring the scenery. Kahului is a simple but well equipped airport, a pleasure to use. The best thing? Flights to Maui deposit you on an island with more miles of accessible, safe beaches than the rest of Hawaii.

Flights to Maui – 120 miles of gorgeous tropical coastline

Eighty one beaches, almost half of which have good facilities like loos and showers. A choice of coloured sands from purest tropical white to deepest black basalt. Olivine, citrine or peridot-green beaches. And scarlet beaches – really! – made up of powdered garnet. How cool is that? Flights to Maui deliver you into a wonderland of beautiful state parks, ten in all, and almost a hundred country parks. Plus a whopper of a national park, Haleakala. The dormant Haleakala Volcano is the island’s highest at over 10,000 feet, with immense views of the hump backed whales playing in the bays far below. Wow. And wow again.

Breathtaking mountains, heavenly beaches. Book your flights to Maui here.

Maui Island Attractions

Oh blimey, we got a headache just by glancing briefly at the range of things to do and see, almost all of which are things you just don’t have the opportunity to do in the UK. Unless there’s a dormant volcano lurking around the South Downs that’s previously escaped our attention of course. Okay, so you CAN go whale watching along the banks of the Thames, and very very occasionally you’ll see one, but it’s just not the same.

West Maui or the resorts on the Kihei and Wailea Coast is where you’d probably be staying on Maui. Lahaina is an old whaling town and there are many attractions there. It was the capital of Hawaii until 1845. Today's Lahaina is great for shopping and is full of ‘old Hawaii’ culture and history too.

All major airlines offer direct flights from the US to Maui. Several flights a day leave to and from other islands, with most originating at Honolulu International Airport (a 20 minute flight). Most visitors to Maui rent a car. Rental rates are reasonable, especially in the low season. Guest parking is generally free or not too expensive, but if you’re driving into Lahaina at night, parking can be tricky.
