Hotels in Kauai – Lovely Lihue and ‘Fantasy Island’ waterfalls

You know that island on TV series ‘Lost’? Kauai looks just like that. Really pointy volcanic mountains covered in furry green vegetation and fiercely steep drops into a savagely blue ocean. Dramatic? You’ve got it. The beaches are a treat too, like being in a film. There’s a great choice of hotels in Kauai, only 20 minutes by air from Honolulu. Try lovely Lihue on the south east coast of Kauai, near Wailua Falls, made famous by embarrassingly dreadful TV show Fantasy Island. Not to worry. Hotels in Kauai have changed since the ‘80s and you’ll find Kauai hotels clean, smart, friendly and beautifully equipped

Kauai Hotels – Six million years’ worth of lava!

Kauai was formed six million years ago, spewed out of the sea by ancient volcanoes. It is small at just over 500 square miles, and sits just north of the other five Hawaiian islands. Choosing hotels in Kauai can be a challenge, but only because they’re all so lovely. Nestling in lush tropical settings, even the plainest building looks wonderfully exotic. Located next to Lydgate Park, Kauai’s safest beach for swimming, the Aolha Beach Resort sits on the ocean front in Wailua Bay, the playground of Kauai's royalty in times long, long past. Hotels in Kauai don’t all offer views like this one does - take in some eye-wateringly gorgeous sunrises from the resort if you’re up early enough.

Kauai Holidays

Kauai holidays are a short 25 minute hop by air from Honolulu. The island is about 550 square miles and is the oldest and northernmost of the main Hawaiian Islands and styles itself as ‘a friendly garden island paradise’. It’s less developed than the other islands and a little harder to get to (there are fewer direct flights to Kauai) so is the place to go for more peace and quiet. Much of the interior is only accessible by hiking or helicopter. It’s a wonderful place for your Hawaii holidays, with the most remarkable tropical landscape including a smaller, but much more beautiful version of the Grand Canyon, a mountain that looks like King Kong, wonderful beaches, and the opportunity that many places in the world offer, but few actually provide – the opportunity to really get away from it all.

Flights to Kauai – 550 square miles of pure heaven

Kauai is the fourth biggest Hawaiian Island, just over thirty three miles long and twenty five miles wide at its fattest. From a geological perspective flights to Kauai land you on the oldest Hawaiian island, spewed from undersea volcanoes almost six million years ago. Blimey. Like the rest of Hawaii, Kauai suffers from renaming syndrome; once it was known as the Garden Island. Now it has been re-named Hawaii's Island of Discovery… we can only assume this helps bewildered holidaymakers choose an island to suit them. Flights to Kauai deposit you at Lihue Airport, the island’s main airport for domestic, international and inter-island flights.

Kauai Flights – Semi tropical, exotic and hot

When we’re shivering in our winter woollies and dreaming about the sun, Kauai averages 78F throughout the grimmest winter months of January and February. Pick flights to Kauai if you’d prefer to spend those dreaded winter weeks in a comfortable semi tropical climate, kept balmy by the deep turquoise Pacific. During August it gets properly steamy and it is boiling hot right through September. Keeping things delightfully fresh, the famous local trade winds bring very welcome warm showers in the morning and evening. They don’t last long and soon dry up, leaving everything smelling fantastic.

Flights to Kauai – Seventy or so glorious beaches

If over a hundred and ten miles of tropical coastline appeals to you, flights to Kauai will fit the bill perfectly. Sixty odd miles of accessible seashore and seventy or so beaches mean that this island gives you more miles of beach per holiday budget quid for your money than anywhere else in Hawaii. Some are odd colours, formed from different elements of the local volcanic rocks breaking down. We imagine that the island’s green beaches are made of something like Olivine, and the black ones are probably basalt. As you can tell, flights to Kauai land you in a geologist’s heaven. Even of you know bugger all about geology and don’t give a stuff, the resulting landscapes will blow your mind.

Volcanoes, beaches, palm trees… book your flights to Kauai here.

Waimea Canyon – Kauai Island Attractions – Hawaii

It’s known as ‘the Grand Canyon of the Pacific’ and with good reason. Waimea Canyon is 10 miles long and 3,600 feet deep. It’s a tremendously dramatic sight. It might not be as big as the grand Canyon, but it’s certainly more beautiful, it’s practically tropical rainforest, with swamps below, and the tops often cloaked in cloud.

Kilauea Lighthouse – Attractions in Kauai Island – Hawaii

Kilauea Lighthouse is the northernmost point of the main Hawaiian Islands. Built in 1913, it was had the largest lens of its kind and was essential to the ships it guided heading to and from the Orient. The Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge is home to a huge population of seabirds including the Laysan albatross and the great frigate bird with its 8-foot wingspan. It’s well worth a trip to the lighthouse even just to wander around outside and wonder at the huge sea birds that add to the overall feeling that you’re a very long way from home on your Kauai Hawaiin holiday

Helicopxer trips – Kauai Island Attractions – Hawaii

A helicopxer ride in Hawaii is *almost* compulsory and on a Kauai holiday, is a great place to do it. Many sites the island holds - waterfalls, sea cliffs, and Waialeale Mountain can only be seen from the air at all!

There are several different tours to choose from, but a good tip is to book your flight as early in the holiday as possible then should weather close in and you need to reschedule, there’s plenty of time.

Tour Kauai’s film locations – Attractions in Kauai Island – Hawaii

There’s a popular Movie Tour that takes you right to the most popular locations where films and television series have been made. Jurassic Park, Raiders of the Lost Ark, South Pacific, Blue Hawaii, and over 30 others! There are bus tours, 4x4 tours and helicopxer tours. Take your pick!

Mountain biking – Kauai Attractions – Hawaii

Flat roads and a lack of big hills (excepx for the road up to Kokee State Park) make it easy to cycle around Kauai. The Poipu area and the cane road, which is a dirt road used for hauling sugar cane between Kealia Beach and Anahola, north of Kapaa, are great places for cycling. You can cycle easy, moderate, or steep routes – the choice is yours! Wailua Falls, Mahaelepu Beach, Moloaa Beach, and the Spalding Monument are some of landmarks along the way. You can easily rent a bike and everything is provided – you don’t even have to take your own helmet on holiday!

It’s a short island hop from Honolulu or you can fly direct from LA or San Francisco. The flight time from LA is about five hours.
