Big Island Hotels

Hotels in Big Island – Try Uncle Billy’s for great hospitality

You’ve got all these wonderful, poetic Hawaiian island names. Then you’ve got ‘Big Island’. The locals must have run out of pretty names. Or maybe Big Island had a name once but everyone just kept saying stuff like “I’m off over to the big island’ and they eventually forgot it. Either way, hotels in Big Island are the stuff that dreams are made of. On Alii Drive (not a typo – Hawaiian has loads of iis) Uncle Billy’s Kona Bay Hotel is a really lovely, great fun tourist class hotel. As hotels in Big Island go, Uncle Billy’s is full of personality and you’ll get a flavour of the real Hawaii here.

Big Island Hotels – Captain Cook came from Middlesbrough!

Against such a stunning tropical backdrop, almost all the hotels in Hawaii that we’ve come across are simply gorgeous to look at. Even the new, modern blocks look beautiful surrounded by luscious greenery and smothered in massive colourful blooms. No wonder Hawaiians always look so smiley, the lucky, lucky, lucky… The Aloha Big Island B&B offers neat guest rooms with a host of nice extra bits and bobs typical of hotels in Big Island; a pool and hot tub, gorgeous Pacific Ocean views and sumptuous tropical gardens. Captain Cook is a town here. Did you know that Captain Cook was born just outside Middlesbrough? Don’t know why that seems odd, it just does.

Hotels in Big Island – Fishing, snorkelling and diving

Big Island is – believe it or not – the biggest Hawaiian island. And there’s masses to do beside just marvel at how lovely everything is. Marvellous fishing, secret and secluded coves and bays for swimming and diving, genuine 100% rain forests, desert territory and, wait for it… snow! Yes, snow. The incredibly well equipped Four Seasons Resort Hualalai sits in a strange semi lunar landscape formed when volcanoes erupted back in the 1800s. What a place – amongst Big Island hotels this one stands out; modern, spotless and set within amazing scenery.

Big Island Holidays

The Big Island, Hawaii, is big indeed - larger than all of the other islands put together, but still only about 4000 square miles (Great Britain covers about 94,000 square miles). Whatever you’re heading to the South Pacific for make time to come to visit Big Island, it’s the home of snowy Mauna Kea and steaming Mauna Loa. What are we talking about? Cocktails again?

Not cocktails - one of the world's most active volcanoes is here in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It’s had molten lava spewing out of it for more than a decade (no one seems to mind though) and then there’re five dormant volcanoes, one of which is Mauna Kea, (which means ‘white peak’) and with a volcanic peak of 13,796 feet, it’s rightly named as it’s covered in snow for part of the year. Mauna Loa means ‘long mountain’ incidentally.

From the coral reefs to the views of the night sky from Mauna Kea Observatory (the world’s largest) this is a remarkable place. You aren’t allowed to look through the observatory telescopes unfortunately, and are not allowed at the 14,000ft summit after dark. Spoil sports.

Big Island Flights

Flights to Big Island – The biggest Hawaiian island

Hawaii's Big Island is the biggest Hawaiian Island, over 4000 square miles of volcanic paradise fringed by stunning coloured sand beaches. Heaven. Take flights to Big Island and treat yourself to a holiday on an island that’s still growing. Like all of Hawaii Big Island is volcanic, formed by volcanic eruptions millions of year ago. Kilauea dominates the island, the planet’s most active volcano. Big Island’s real name is ‘Hawaii Island’ but nobody seems to call it that. Too confusing, we suppose. The islands’ recent tourist explosion means that flights to Big Island also land you in Hawaii's so-called Island of Adventure. Re-naming is endemic in Hawaii, just like at home. Once upon a time,North Yorkshire was North Yorkshire. Now it is carved up into little TV and history-related sections; Emmerdale Country, Bronte Country, Herriot country…

Big Island Flights – Hilo International airport

If you’re an island amongst islands, you rely heavily on your airports. OK, Big Island is quite big as Hawaii goes but, for a small place, it is well served with airports. If you’re on you holidays though, flights to Big Island will land you at Kona International Airport, at Keahole, a couple of miles from Hilo and seven or so from Kailua-Kona. The island’s also home to Upolu Airport and Waimea-Kohala Airport, both of which are smaller. Choose flights to Big Island and head for the main resorts along the dry, sunny Kohala Coast, protected in the rain shadow of the mountains. Head for Hilo itself or quiet Kailua-Kona. On Big Island you’ll enjoy deep sea fishing, hiking, horse riding, sailing, scuba diving and – of course – amazing golf.

Flights to Big Island – More than 260 miles of pristine coastline

Pick flights to Big Island and spend your entire holiday exploring the coastline if that’s what dings your bell. Big Island has more than 260 miles of coast, including 100+ gorgeous beaches. The island’s well set up for holidaymakers and many of the beaches have excellent facilities. Or find yourself a deserted beach all to yourself and play Robinson Crusoe. - The Big Island has over 100 beaches, many of which have public facilities. Some of the beaches have your classic tropical white sand. Some have bizarre black volcanic sand. And others are formed of greenish sand… pretty weird but great fodder for unusual holiday snaps.

Big Island Attractions

The Panaewa Rainforest Zoo – Big Island Attractions – Hawaii

Situated in a tropical rain forest. Now look, we know you can go to the Zoo in the UK, but you can’t go to a zoo in Hawaii when you’re in the UK! You certainly can’t visit a tropical rainforest zoo. No Sir, Chester Zoo is NOT in a tropical rainforest, it’s just rains a lot there. What’s more there’s a petting zoo every Saturday for an hour between 1:30 and 2:30 and tiger feeding every day at 3:30. DON’T get those two mixed up or, more appropriately, hope the zoo staff doesn’t get them confused.

Valley Waterfall Adventure – Attractions Big Island – Hawaii

Treat yourself to this once-in-a-lifetime Hawaiian experience on the Big Island. Take a pleasant guided nature walk through awesome scenery and amazing waterfalls! A Naturalist Guide (that’s naturalist, not naturist) talks about the cultural history, as you walk by sparkling waterfalls, tropical plants and smashing Hawaii-only views. Kapoloa Falls plunges from 300 feet above and cascades another 200 feet down below the trail. You can walk behind the falls too, but it’s not for those without a head for heights!

Kilauea Volcano Discovery Hike – Big Island Attractions â€“ Hawaii

Take a hike - into Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. For some reason they don’t set you free in a Range Rover, maybe it’s that molten lava and the volcanic craters, either way you’ll be on an escorted tour. There’s a minimum age of eight years old, and some of the terrain over hardened lava can be uneven. We’ve asked them to bulldoze it a bit flatter, but they never even reply.

Big Island Kilauea Volcano Adventure From Kailua-Kona – Attractions Big Island – Hawaii

Don’t want to walk quite as much? Take an all-day adventure to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (including Kilauea Volcano) and back - a 250 mile drive, taking in over 4 volcanoes with an overall elevation change of 37,000 feet as you go up and down and over mountains.

Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden – Big Island Attractions  â€“ Hawaii

A garden valley where nature trails meander through a tropical rainforest, across streams, and past many lovely waterfalls that make Dunns River in Jamaica look like the Manchester Ship Canal. Okay, maybe that’s unfair, but there are certainly fewer spiders in Hawaii. Then there’s that majestic Pacific coast to take in too.

Getting to Big Island

Flying is the most common way to get to Hawaii’s Big Island. There’s Kona International Airport on the west side of the island, and Hilo International Airport on the east. This is where cruise ships stop too, so you could always cruise here!
