Zante Hotels

Hotels in Zante – A proper island paradise

Bet you haven’t been on holiday to a place beginning with ‘z’ before! Zante is home to the famous (in Greece) Mr Solomos, composer of the Greek National Anthem. Zante is absolutely beautiful with sparkling seas, blue bays and fresh, clean air. Hotels in Zante give you all this and more. How can you bear not to go?! The Plagos Beach Hotel sits on the beach at Amboula, an attractive place surrounded by lush greenery. Like most large hotels in Zante it has great sports facilities; tennis, both real and table varieties, a pool, sun beds, a full programme of entertainment and activities and Greek evening entertainment.

Zante Hotels – Crusty old sea dogs and smugglers

Smugglers Cove is Zante’s most famous beach and it rates high for the whole of Greece. Quite simply, it is paradise. Most Zante hotels will give you details about trips to the cove, which is only accessible by boat. The all inclusive Caravel hotel stands on a delightful sandy bay, surrounded by olive groves. Just four miles outside Zante town on the outskirts of Tsilivi, hotels in Zante don’t come better value than this. The hotel is right near a load of good tavernas and bars and despite its huge size, the staff are typically hospitable… the Greeks are lovely.

Hotels in Zante – Explore the fantastic Blue Caves

Zante’s Blue Caves were discovered in 1897. In the north of the island, they’re not far from Cape Skinari. If you thought you know blue, think again. These underwater caves give you the true meaning of full on, vibrant, amazing BLUE! Which hotels in Zante are the best? It has to be said, they’re all pretty good. Why not dip your toe in at the Louros Beach hotel at Kalamaki? It’s impressively simple, elegant and comfortable… a spot of luxury just 200m from the beach, three miles from the town centre and a mile from Zakynthos Airport.

Zante Holidays

Zante, or Zakynthos as it’s known locally, is a great place to start your relationship with Greece and the Greek islands. The locals are lovely and the town – Zante Town – is different to a lot of the rest of Greece by virtue of it being knocked flat by an earthquake about 50 years ago and then rebuilt in a cheeky Venetian style. Yes, we just looked at a picture of it on the Interweb and can confirm it looks remarkably Venice-like. Not so many canals though. Okay, no canals at all, except for one or two that have sprung up, remarkably at the same time as those Venetian-looking hotels, such as the Louis Palazzo di Zante did.**

Zante Holidays - turtle reserve

Loggerhead turtles are protected here – this is important. Don’t make jokes about them. No ‘I couldn’t eat a whole one’ quips, as the locals take them very seriously. The airport closes at night to protect the little fellows (the turtles, not the locals) and there are strict rules about littering and not disturbing, harassing, or otherwise bothering the turtles. That includes catching one, taking it on bar crawls with you for the rest of the week, then trying to smuggle it back to the UK, dressing it up as your nan, claiming ‘she’s lost her passport’. They’d lock you up and throw away the key. And rightly so.

Zante holidays are fun and it's a place that’s becoming more popular, but locals still outnumber the tourists, which is good. Like many Greek island airports, the airport is tiny and can get crowded quickly. Pay close attention to when your return flight leaves, avoiding early morning departures and allow for being stuck at the airport possibly without access to facilities. Now don’t panic, we just mean take some water and any other supplies you might expect to be able to get at the airport, but won’t be able to because it’s too small and so busy. Try to avoid flying back on a Sunday. Just be prepared for Zante airport!

** You *could* stay in Birmingham for a day or two on the way to Zante and you’d have more of the Venice effect at a bargain price. There are more miles of canal in Birmingham than there are in Venice – there are, really. Look, don’t argue, the Grande Canal in Venice is only just over two miles long where as the Birmingham Fazeley canal is 20 miles long. What’s that you say? Birmingham’s not romantic? What are you on about?! It’s got a Selfridges. And think of the money you’d save.

Zante Flights

Flights to Zante – AKA Zakynthos

For some reason Zante is also known as Zakynthos… we have no idea why the two names. Flights to Zante land you directly at Zante airport, on the island itself so you don’t have to waste precious beach time faffing around with inter-island transfers. Where’s the airport? To the south of the island, only half a mile or so from the resort of Laganas. It is the fifth busiest airport in Greece so expect plenty of company on your flights to Zante… fantastic news if you’re there for a manic week or two of over-indulgence and twenty four hour a day partying. While Zante is a delightful island and very pretty, it can get terrifically busy. But it depends which resort you stay in. The town of Laganas is the hub of most of the island’s frantic nightlife, packed solid with clubs, pubs, bars and tavernas. Argassi, in contrast, is significantly more chilled.

Zante Flights – Island of songs

The Greeks call Zante ‘The island of songs’ and the locals love to sing. Take flights to Zante and immerse yourself in local musical culture. Every restaurant seems to have its own group of melodious and enthusiastic singers – usually burly Greek blokes. Take your guitar if you’re into jamming, and learn some cool and not so cool Greek riffs. If flights to Zante wouldn’t be complete without plenty of opportunity to shop yourself silly, you’ll be glad to hear that Zakynthos town has good shopping. Everything from souvenirs to clothes, beach stuff and intricate, beautiful locally made icons.

Flights to Zante – Smart arrivals and departures areas

Since 2005 Zante airport has added smart new arrivals and departures areas which are a great improvement. Formerly tatty and clogged, flights to Zante now land at an efficient, spacious airport with impressively fast baggage handling. Zante is home to some very rare beasts – Caretta turtles – which are endangered and threatened. While Zante has miles and miles of gorgeous beaches some are reserved for the turtles, so watch out for the signs. Bear in mind that because Caretta turtles don’t like loud noises at night you can’t get night flights to Zante. Fair enough.

Zante Attractions

Attractions in Zante - Zante Town

It’s the capital of Zante and mustn’t be missed because it’s like going to Venice without the smell. Oh, okay, Venice only smells a bit in the height of summer. Either way, Zante is a lovely town. You can’t miss it; this is not a massive island and all roads lead here.

Attrcations Zante - Caves of Zakynthos

The northern coast of Zante has loads of little caves and coves. The Kianoun Cave and the caves at Sklavou are favourites. You can take a boat trip from the south coast or drive up to the north coast and explore them by boat from there.

Getting to Zante

Oh dear they really need to do something about the airport. Imagine getting off the 8am train from Hither Green not at huge Charring Cross station, but at tiny Chesham station. Don’t know what we’re talking about? Well, the train in question has 10 crammed carriages, and Chesham station one small exit and a flower pot.

Welcome to Zante airport. At least with Beat the brochure you are forewarned and thus should try and make your travel arrangements with us outside of the busiest times.
