Hotels in Athens – Noisy, vibrant capital city of Greece

Athens has seen a lot of changes since they hosted the Olympics and hotels in Athens are no exception. Many have been smartened up and modernised and the city’s now easy to walk around, cleaner and greener. The 3 star Areos Hotel is a fab new boutique-style hotel right next to Athens’ popular Areos Park. They offer free wireless internet access, a smashing restaurant and bar and – like most hotels in Athens – really good sound proofing. Some thing don’t change and the city’s traffic is still completely insane!

Athens Hotels – Ride the new coastal tram

Athens new metro service whips visitors to and from the city and the airport in no time so getting to and from hotels in Athens won’t be a problem. The coastline tram is a great way to explore the area and lets you wander freely all along the coast into the ‘burbs. The 5 star Royal Olympia Hotel is one of the finest Athens hotels, right beneath the Acropolis in front of the Temple of Zeus! Hotels in Athens don’t all offer you piano and violin concerts in the lobby bar… this one does!

Hotels in Athens – Views of the Acropolis

Athens was originally built round the Acropolis walls, but it soon broke its boundaries to become a massive sprawl of four and a half million people. Phew. The lovely four star Hotel Fresh is right in the middle of this lot, and it’s a little oasis of calm! Contemporary and minimalist, it stands out amongst hotels in Athens for a remarkably relaxing atmosphere. The hotel restaurant serves fabulous Greek food sourced from the local market, fresh as a fresh thing. A great place to chill out after a hectic night out. Cool in summer, warm in winter.

Holidays to Athens - Where It All Began

Athens holidays offer a glimpse of the birthplace of civilization. There are loads of historic tourist sights in Athens. The Agora, the Temple of Zeus, built around 1500 years ago, Hadrian's Arch, the Dionysos Theatre, which is the oldest theatre in the world. There’s the National Historical Museum, the National Archaeological Museum, and Greece’s National Art Gallery.

Athens Holidays - A Centre of Culture

Athens is much more than just historical attractions.  It has the finest restaurants and most varied nightlife in the whole of Greece.  Its also a major European Centre of Culture, and the Athens Festival is major event each year.  Hosting the olympic games in 2004 brought many new developments to the city.  This included major sports venues,  an improved transport system and the upgrade of several hotels.

Holidays to Athens - Perfect for City Breaks

Smog? What’s all that about Athens smog? Like so many things in Athens, The Athens smog is history. Well, almost. Traffic isn’t so bad these days, with more and more streets excluding traffic. There’s great public transport that puts London to shame and has gone some way to get that Athens smog put down. It’s not perfect yet, but what big cities don’t have a problem with traffic pollution? You will likely arrive in Athens on your Greece holidays so be sure to spend a couple of nights exploring this fascinating city.

Flights to Athens – A mightily flashy new airport

Flying into Athens is a lot easier and more laid back since the Olympics were held there. The airport as been modernised and extended and it’s a pleasure to travel through these days. Flights to the new Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport (pronounce that if you dare!) bring you to a friendly place, Greece’s manic capital city. See Athens and die? Some people love it, others detest it. Five million people live in the city and it is hot, crowded, busy, full-on and occasionally smoggy. On the positive side, there’s enough to do to keep you busy for weeks. And flights to Athens put you within easy reach of the quieter bits of Greece, the country’s resorts and jewel-like uninhabited islands.

Athens Flights – Old stuff everywhere

Not many cities show so many of their ancient bones. The oldest bits of London are underground, buried and forgotten. But Athens’ history pokes through the modern stuff everywhere you look. Flights to Athens are ideal for history buffs and academics, who will relish strolling through the Agora and the view from the Acropolis. The Olympic Games improved living standards for locals in all sorts of ways and the city’s now much nicer to walk around with renovated buildings, green stuff, new parks and loads of fresh pedestrian-friendly areas. These days you can walk safely around the whole Acropolis area including Thission and Keramikos, all 90 percent pedestrianised.

Flights to Athens – City breaks and romantic long weekends

Flights to Athens airport can be delayed, like flights anywhere. Some of the locals recommend that, unless your delay is a significant one, it might be best to stay in the airport and relax than brave the chaos outside. The food at the airport is really good, staff are friendly and it’s a cool pace to hang out away from the traffic fumes. Choose flights to Athens for a city break with a difference, a stag or hen weekend or a romantic long weekend and you won’t be disappointed.

We love it. Marvellous stuff.

Attractions Athens - The Acropolis

The Acropolis is one of the most recognizable monuments in the world and dates back to the golden age for Athens, which was some 1500 years ago. Don’t visit the Acropolis in the middle of the day – the baking midday sun might cook you alive. Traffic has been excluded from some nearby streets so there’s less smog, but do be sure to avoid that hot lunchtime sun! There are great views from the Acropolis (Acropolis means ‘upper city’). Lots of Greek towns had an acropolis. The building that’s so famous here at the Athens Acropolis is The Parthenon.

Been to the British Museum? Cheeky Lord Elgin brought some bits of The Parthenon back to the UK over 200 years ago, without really asking for permission. Greece understandably wants these bits back. Try to avoid the subject when you’re there. Practice saying this: ‘Elgin marbles? Never heard of them.’ Ideally in Greek. We don’t want to be giving them back you know, it might start a trend. If we had to give everything we’d accumulated back, all our museums would be empxy by the end of the year, excepx for Paul McCartney’s original manuscripx for ‘Yesterday’, which would be the British Museum’s only un-claimed exhibit. Almost.

Athens Attractions - The Roman Agora of Athens

This is even older than the Acropolis and was built around 11 BC. Partly funded by a donation from Julius Caesar it has nothing to do with Romans, it was just built during Roman times. It’s a complex of a big rectangular court, surrounded by colonnades and allsorts of shops.

Attractions Athens - National Archaeological Museum of Athens

One of the best museums in the world, the National Archaeological Museum of Athens has Cycladic, Minoan, Mycenaean and Classical Greek art all in a neoclassic building. There’s a lovely sculpxure garden café as well.
