Hotels in EgyptCairo, exotic home to 15 million +

Cairo, Egypt’s capital, is the African continent’s biggest city. It is growing so fast that nobody really knows how many people live there. The latest guess? Between fifteen and twenty million. Either way, it’s huge. Hotels in Egypt range from luxury to basic and Cairo has plenty of high-end accommodation. Spoil yourself at the magnificent President Hotel on the island of Zamalek, where two branches of the Nile meet. This is one of Cairo’s greenest and most laid back areas. Like many hotels in Egypt the President is new and modern, and it is also close to the famous Gezira sporting club. Swim, play tennis, have a round of golf or go horse riding. Lovely place.

Egypt Hotels – Plenty of bling for you money!

Say Egypt and everyone thinks pyramids. But there’s much more to it than pointy monuments, fabulous as they are. Adventurous types head off into the desert or trek the Nile’s fertile banks. Go on foot, camel or 4x4. Luxor is a good place to start. One of the biggest hotels in Egypt’s ancient city Luxor is the five star Isis Hotel. Set in a breathtaking 28 acres of subtropical gardens, it is right on the Nile and close to Luxor centre. Take shades… Egypt hotels like the Isis come with plenty of bling for your money, whether you’re traveling for business or fun.

Hotels in Egypt – Try lovely Taba

The Hotel Taba is in the resort of Taba’s 25 miles from the city of Taba on the Egyptian Riviera. What a gorgeous place! Divers love Egypt so if you’re a diving fan head for hotels in Egypt along the coast. The Taba hotel is on the Gulf of Agapa and has loads of wonderful facilities. A health club, heated outdoor pools, tennis, diving and watersports centre, DJ and extravagant twice-weekly ‘shows’ with oriental themes. Lavish? Think Olympic Opening Ceremony then add some!

Cheap Holidays in Egypt -  Many Historical Attractions

Find a cheap holiday to Egypt, a destination that combines history and culture, with lively entertainment. All of Egypt is so ludicrously steeped in history, from its biblical connections (a young Jesus was taken to Egypt by his family when he was but a lad, not a holidAay exactly, they were trying to escape naughty Herod’s death sentence on Jewish children) to the might of King Ramesses II whose mummified remains are still displayed in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo some 3500 years after his death, there’s wonder and mystery everywhere. The massive city of Cairo with its 15 million plus population, Minarets, bazaars, and unbridled luxury rubbing shoulders with utter poverty is an incredible place, but a surprising order and relatively low crime rate prevails. Holidays to Cairo are an excellent choice for those who like the hussle and bussle of a lively, but safe, city.

There are few places to visit in the world that have been receiving tourists as long as Egypt has. Over 2000 years ago Romans were cruising up the Nile and visiting the pyramids, long before the early explorers from the UK came back with tails of amazing structures in the desert. We’ve more than just pointy buildings to thank ancient Egypt for – there’s the calendar, clocks, paper, and, unfortunately, cats. They weren’t that clever then, we think they should have domesticated otters, which are far more intelligent, and could live in the bath.

Cheap Egypt Holidays - The Pyramids

The pyramids are hardly surrounded just by desert anymore, the most famous pyramids we mean, as there are over 100 pyramids in Egypt, but some are falling to bits more so than the most famous ones – the pyramids of Giza. The massive urban sprawl of Cairo reaches almost to the foot of the great Giza pyramids, where the largest pyramid ever built dominates the skyline. The Cheops pyramid is a great wonder of the world, and in the middle of the three main pyramids that make up the Giza pyramids. They are mausoleums really, for the mummified remains of King Cheops (and a few wives) and are pyramid shaped because anything in a pyramid is supposed to live forever. Cheops was the possibly first fellow to be mummified. The surface of the pyramids was once perfectly smooth with all the entrances invisible, but this surface was eventually hacked away and a long process of plundering began in about 820 AD.

Cheap Egypt Holidays - A Great Place to Relax

However, you can go to Egypt and never see a pyramid should you be settling down for a few weeks and enjoying your summer holidays in Sharm el-Sheikh, as it’s a good 335 miles from Cairo and the Giza pyramids. You can spend weeks in Sharm el-Sheikh doing nothing other than sitting on the private beaches, enjoying some of the best diving in the world in the Red Sea, having a go in the casino, and generally enjoying the nightlife of the Red Sea Riviera. The pyramids and Cairo itself aren’t completely out of the question from Sharm el-Sheikh – a long and fairly gruelling way in a coach, but not impossible, much easier by air of course. There’s Mount Sinai to explore, and you can hunt for bits of the tablet with the 5 commandments on it that Moses dropped on his way down with the 15 commandments.

Or how about spending your holidays in Taba. Taba is a relatively newly reachable town, on the border of Israel, its airport only opened in 2000. You can get a bus to Eilat across the border in Israel quite easily, but there’s plenty to do here, as long as being cosseted in cheap five star all-inclusive luxury in Egypt and enjoying the hospitality of the wonderful Egyptian people is alright with you. It’s a resort still in development, but that doesn’t mean it’s a building site. There are strict local rules and laws that developers have to comply with that help protect the natural environment and delicate ecological balance of the red sea, and the Sinai desert, which is one of the most stunning deserts in the world.

Hurghada is fairly new too, not quite as new as Taba as a resort, as it’s been growing and spreading out along the Red Sea for nearly 30 years now and currently stretches for about 26 miles along the coast. Holidays to Hurghada offer nightlife, diving, great weather, and hospitality – what else could you want on holiday?

Low Cost Holidays in Egypt –  Plenty of Attractions

The massive city of Cairo or smaller Luxor, where you might visit should you go on a Valley of the Kings trip to see the mummy of Tutankhamun, are everything you’d expect – huge sprawling masses of humanity, most of whom seem intent on extracting cash from you for various reasons. Keep your wits about you and you’ll be okay though. And do be careful crossing the road! Expect lots of people to be ‘guarding’ the main attractions, such as the pyramids, and try not to let being led slightly astray spoil your visit, just focus on what you need to do and brush aside any offers to go on other impromptu tours that you haven’t planned.

Women should dress conservatively in this mainly Muslim country of course, which means arms and legs covered incidentally, especially if you’re visiting a Mosque or other place of worship. There are posh hotels galore both in the cities and the Red Sea Riviera resorts. However, even in the posh bits you don’t have to stray too far to find many people desperate to get you into their taxi, on their tour, or otherwise parting with your money. None of this is dangerous or intimidating enough to make it a massive problem, security is high in Egypt, so don’t miss Egypt off your list of ‘must visit’ places. Far from it in fact, Egypt belongs right at the top of that list as it never disappoints.

The pyramids and sphinx are not the only historic monuments in Egypt of course, but they are the only remaining examples of the Seven Wonders of the World, It’s stunning to be there, in the heat on the edge of the desert, locals vying for your attention, what was the tallest building in the world for thousands of years dominating the skyline. Like the rest of Egypt, the pyramids don’t disappoint. If you go inside, to which there’s a limit of 300 people per day at the moment, don’t expect it to be a particularly comfortable experience, especially if you’re anything over about 5’6 tall. They weren’t built for us lot to clamber round in!

Security issues and concerns are as paramount in Egypt as they are anywhere else in the world these days, but the Egyptian authorities have more experience than most at handling things and are generally well thought of internationally.

Flights to Egypt – Some weird and wonderful facts

Rather than chat about the pyramids and all that, which we’ve already done for our Cairo page, we thought we’d go in search of some weird facts about Egypt. Flights to Egypt are about more than the standard – albeit wonderful – tourist attractions. And we like gathering pub quiz fodder. Here’s some nice ones. Did you know that the ancient Egyptians chopped the year up into twelve thirty day months. We wonder what they did with the five days left over? Did they pretend the extra days didn’t exist? Did they party themselves blind at the end of every year in an effort to paper over the whole conundrum? Who knows. Choose flights to Egypt and maybe you’ll find out.

Egypt Flights – The land of extreme cat lovers

Did you know that the ancient Egyptians adored their pet cats so much that they’d shave their eyebrows off in mourning when one died? We love our cats too but our eyebrows are sacred. Without them we only have two expressions; bewildered happy and bewildered sad. Flights to Egypt cover several airports; Alexandria, Cairo, Aswan, Hurghada, Luxor Marsa Alam, Sharm El Sheikh, St Catherine and Taba. Some have been built to service newish purpose built resorts, others are vast retail-focused complexes where you can buy stuff, relax, eat and drinks - almost cities in themselves.

Flights to Egypt – The original carrier pigeons

More Egypt facts to get you going? Hm, let’s see. If you thought Queen Victoria had a good innings, witness Egyptian king Pepi II. He was crowned when he was six and stayed on the throne until he was almost ninety five years old. And - my favourite factoid - ancient Egyptians were the first ever people to send messages via pigeon. Clever lot. You’ve got to hand it to pigeons too. Take flights to Egypt and you’ll see the good old pigeon everywhere, just like here in the UK. Far from being vermin with wings, they’re intelligent and adaptable. Whatever, they’ll probably be here long after we’ve gone.

Book your flights to Egypt here. Easy. No faffing, fiddling or fuming.

Egypt Attractions - Egyptian Antiquities Museum – Cairo

The world’s largest collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts is here, but that’s not tremendously surprising as it is a big museum in Egypt. There are over 120,000 items on display. The Tutankhamen (it’s also often spelled Tutankhamun – both ways are right!) collection features that legendary gold death mask, and the royal Mummy room with its 27 mummies.

Attraction in Egypt - Khan Al-Khalili – Cairo

Right in the middle of Islamic Cairo this is a busy bazaar filled with unique and exotic items, such as spices, perfumes, and jewellery.

Coptic Museum – Cairo

Coptics were Egyptian Christians, so the Coptic museum features stone carvings from the era of the Mamluks, a 6th-century Coptic stone pulpit and the 1,600-year-old Coptic book of the Psalms of David.

Church of the Virgin – Cairo

Over 1000 years old, this church contains many valuable icons, including some signed by the famous icon painter, John the Armenian. Icon is a Coptic word, possibly. It might be Greek, there’s not a lot in it. Either way, it means the same thing, a religious image used to depict God.

Attractions Egypt - Cairo Tower – Cairo

There are grand views of Cairo and its many monuments from the revolving rooftop restaurant and bar 600 feet up this tower. You don’t have to go to the expensive restaurant, head straight for the roof terrace. Like most things in Egypt you have to pay of course.

Old City – Cairo

The first mosque built in Egypt is here, as well as five churches, and the oldest synagogue in Egypt are here. It’s also sometimes known as the Roman stronghold of Babylon as some parts of the old Roman walls still exist, a bit like St Albans then. You can’t get to London in 20 minutes from Cairo though.

Church of St Barbara – Cairo

There are lots of smashing religious icons in this church, some parts of which date back 1500 years. It’s called after St Barbara, who converted to Christianity sometime in the third century, refusing to marry any of the Alexandria men. Her dad got very cross indeed and it all went pear-shaped, resulting in the untimely departure of St Barbara from this earth. Even if you can’t quite manage to dress modestly around town (you really should) definitely make the effort when visiting specifically religious shrines.

Pharaonic Village – Cairo

Oh look, it’s like Disneyland. You get in to a motorised barge and go through recreations of life in the times of the Pharoes. However, unlike Disneyland there are real people recreating scenes from ancient Egypt for you here. No animatronics or holograms here.

Ben Ezra Synagogue – Cairo

The oldest existing synagogue in Cairo, the Synagogue of Ben Ezra was originally named El-Shamieen Church. It is believed that the site of the Synagogue was where Baby Moses was found. Synagogue means: A prayer place for the Jews.

Serapeum – Cairo

Serapeum means ‘a building associated with the cult of the Apis bulls’, sort of. In Zoser's funerary complex at Saqqara, this serapeum was for mummified bulls. There’s a step pyramid forming a highly visible part of this huge complex that was once surrounded by a 30 foot high wall. There are fourteen false doors in the wall, only one of which enters the complex (we believe it’s clearly marked). The Serapeum is where the sacred bulls of Apis are buried. The temple was discovered in 1850 when a famous Squatting Scribe statue was discovered, which is considered to be one of the world’s greatest sculptures.

Attractions Egypt - Abu Sir Pyramids – Cairo

There are four of the original fifteen that were once on this site. These are smaller than the Giza lot, and not in as good condition, which is surprising as they are not as old, dating in at around 2500 BC.

Giza Pyramids – Cairo

The Great pyramid was 481 ft high when it was built, but has unfortunately shrunk a little over the years, losing some 30 ft off the top thanks to being robbed of every last bit of anything remotely valuable on or in it. It was the tallest building on Earth for more than 4300 years, only to be surpassed in height in the past 100 years. It was covered with a casing of smooth stones that have all since been plundered for building in Cairo. The sides slope at angles of 51 degrees and 51 minutes and each side is aligned with one of the points of the compass. Any cross section of the pyramid is almost perfectly square anywhere up it, to a tolerance of under 0.1%

Mosque of Al-Azhar – Cairo

The oldest university in the world is built around this ancient mosque, which has been the centre of Islamic scholarship for 1000 years and was the first mosque to be built in Cairo.

Alabaster Sphinx – Cairo

This impressive monument was carved in honour of a Pharaoh who is yet to be identified during the 18th Dynasty, which was about 3500 years ago, it’s 26 feet long, 13 feet tall and weighs 90 tons, so don’t try and pick it up, or if you must, at least keep your knees bent.

Cairo Opera House – Cairo

The Cairo Opera House is on the Gezira Island near the Museum of Egyptian Modern Arts, Nile Gallery, the Plastic Artists' Association and El Hangar Theatre. The Cairo Opera House is undoubtedly the smartest and most modern theatre in Africa and the Middle East.

Egypt Attractions - Colossus of Ramses II – Cairo

This massive statue carved in limestone is more than 33 feet long and is located in a museum building built specifically to protect it. This fellow is having a lie down; it’s suspected that he wasn’t finished. He nearly ended up in London, in the British Museum, but was too big to be moved.

It takes around 4 hours and 45 minutes in the air from the UK, in an aircraft of course. That has you landing in Cairo, if you’re off to Sharm E Sheikh at the other end of the country, it’s a total flight time more in the region of 5 hours and 10 minutes. Cairo airport is about 30 minutes in a taxi from the centre of Cairo.

Remember that in Egypt you need to haggle over the price before you get in a taxi. Go in low, that’s our advice. Ophira airport, which is the name of the local airport for Sharm E Sheikh, is only 5 miles from the Red Sea so you could be on the beach within about 10 minutes after collecting your baggage.
