Hotels in Tenerife – Stick to the coast, the inland roads are really scary!

Tenerife’s interior is quite tough to negotiate; terrifyingly steep roads, scary hairpin bends and thousand foot cliffs. Not for the faint hearted. Most visitors tend to stick to the popular resorts of Los Cristianos and Playa de as Americas, both in the island’s south west. Resort front hotels in Tenerife tend to be large, well equipped and comfy, and the Columbus Hotel is no exception. Designed to a flamboyant Arab style, it is right in the centre of Playa de las Americas on a pretty palm lined road that leads straight to the beach. You won’t find many large hotels in Tenerife without a pool and this one’s a beauty. Plus there’s a private sunbathing area, poolside and piano bars, a lively disco and a well stocked games room.

Tenerife Hotels – Visit Siam Park for big time water fun

Siam Park is being billed as Europe’s most spectacular water park. And what a giggle it is. Brilliant fun. The park’s wacky design is – weirdly - based on the ancient kingdom of Siam. Eccentric as it is, it’ll keep you and the family happy for days. Most Tenerife hotels are close enough to Siam Park for convenience and many have fantastic facilities. Take the Costa Adeje Gran Hotel, for example; a crazily magnificent building with a cool glass frontage, right next to Costa Adeje shopping mall. The hotel complex includes a choice of excellent restaurants and bars, from Italian food to themed buffet nights.

Hotels in Tenerife – Black sand beaches and man made white sands

In their natural state Tenerife’s beaches are made up of funky black volcanic sand. But many of them have been ’improved’ using imported pale sands - the kind we’re all used to. Like all the Canary Islands Tenerife is volcanic and you can climb El Teide, the island’s main volcano, and get amazing panoramic views. Watch out though – it’s surprisingly cold up there. Hotels in Tenerife come in all shapes and sizes, and they’re not all posh. If you’re in Tenerife to party and you don’t care where you sleep try the Laguna Park II, a basic apartment complex in Costa Adeje just five minutes’ stagger from Torviscas Beach. It’s on a steep slope so you might have to take a run at it if you’re a bit worse for wear. Once you’ve made it, you’ll find your apartment simple and functional. A crash pad? That’ll do nicely.

Here are just some of the hotels and resorts we sell in Tenerife

Cheap Tenerife Holidays -  Year Round Sunshine

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, and by far the most popular.  It has fantastic all year round weather, and is very popular during all months of the year.  It's a great choice for families, and has plenty to offer for those that enjoy nightlife.  Tenerife has lovely gardens and picture views in every direction.  The beaches are great too. There’s also a volcano towering over 12,000 feet into the sky.  The island has many other popular attractions too, and the resorts are not too over developed. Tenerife holidays offer something for everyone.

Bargain Holidays in Tenerife - Many Attractions

There’s a botanical gardens on Tenerife at Puerto de la Cruz founded in 1788 that rivals Kew Gardens. Trees and plants from every corner of the world keep anyone remotely interested delighted for hours. Loro Park is the place to go to see the largest parrot collections in the world. We’re pretty sure that’s the largest number of parrots, they aren’t necessarily large parrots.  The island also has great waterparks and a variety of watersports to choose from.  It also has some of the best bars and nightclubs in the whole of Europe.

Holidays in Tenerife -  Fantastic Resorts

Playa de las Américas next door to Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje was an early adopter of the ‘attract Northern Europeans here’ battle cry. Great Britain has put its historic stamp on this area by culturally exporting what we do best: pubs and fish and chip shops. If you want to go abroad without going abroad, this is the place for you. Costa Adeje is really part of Playa de las Américas, but with posher hotels.  There’s a long promenade running from Playa de las Americas and Costa Adeje. It’s pedestrians only, which is grand. The only traffic you’ll encounter will be the people eager to sell you their wares, whatever they may be. Los Cristianos is one of the most popular resorts on all of the Canary Islands. Whilst on your tenerife holiday remember that the harbour offers fishing trips, glass bottom boats, and diving excursions. It’s not quite as ‘invaded by the English’ as Playa de las Américas and more than a little quieter. Cheap all inclusive deals to Tenerife are available at these excellent resorts.

Flights to Tenerife – Volcanoes and beaches

Tenerife is home to almost 800,000 people, most of whom are probably involved with tourism one way or another. Once a sparsely populated island with a small trade in wine, it is now a tourist hot spot and a very popular destination with UK holidaymakers. Investigating flights to Tenerife, we came across an interesting fact; apparently the island is packed solid with 29 inhabitants per square metre. Surely not… we went there once and it didn’t seem that crowded! They must mean per square km? Anyway… volcanic Mount Teide sits at the island’s centre, almost 4000m high and snowy at the top even in summer. Most people choose flights to Tenerife for a classic beach holiday; it seldom drops below 20C in winter and in summer it averages 25C. Lovely.

Tenerife Flights – Reina Sofia airport

Holiday flights to Tenerife will probably drop you off at Reina Sofia airport, although the island has two airports on offer. Los Rodeos in the north if the island is smaller and sees much less tourist traffic. All the same, four million or so passengers passed through Los Rodeos in 2007. Flights to Tenerife Reina Sofia, home of most of the island’s charter flights, usually include transfers to your hotel or resort. If yours doesn’t, not to worry. There are loads of taxis for hire and the island’s public transport is excellent. Unlike many Spanish resorts Tenerife gets busier as the weather in the UK gets worse as Brits flee gloomy winters. Reina Sofia airport is Spain’s seventh busiest with almost nine million passengers spread across a massive 65,000-ish flights.

Flights to Tenerife – Hit Santa Cruz for an injection of culture

Santa Cruz, the capital of Tenerife, offers more than sea and sand. There’s museums, monuments and guided tours on offer too, a nice break from frying on the beach. La Laguna is actually much prettier and more scenic than the capital, a quaint place with cobbled streets and old buildings. Flights to Tenerife don’t all land you in a modern contemporary landscape – you can find old stuff too. If you’re heading for Puerto de la Cruz resort you’ll find bits and pieces of pirate related history scattered around. And the marina at Puerto Colon is cool, stuffed with the most expensive yachts you can imagine.

Loro Park - Tenerife Attractions - Canary Islands

This place has the largest collection of parrots in the world. There’s a dolphinarium too. It’s so nice to see dolphins and parrots mixing in peace and harmony at last.

Botanical Gardens - Attractions in Tenerife - Canary Islands

The botanical gardens at Puerto de la Cruz were founded in 1788. That makes many of the trees there very old indeed. They are thus either huge or have grown into remarkably unlikely shapes and are extremely impressive for anyone remotely interested in trees. It’s not as big as Kew Gardens, but no where near as expensive to enter either.

El Teide  - Tenerife Attractions - Canary Islands

Standing at over 12,000 feet, El Teide is the highest point in the whole of Spain, not just the Canary Islands. Millions of people each year head for the hills and start the long steep walk through the rich vegetation around the slopes of El Teide. A more volcanic landscape takes over at about 6,000 feet as you continue to climb to the very edge of the crater.

Don’t fancy all that climbing on your tenerife holiday? Very wise. Take the cable car, which goes within 600 feet of the summit. You need a special permit* to go right to the edge of the crater and catch the stench of fumes that the doubting Thomases among you will need to smell to prove to yourselves that this is not a totally dormant volcano; it’s still doing a bit of business down there, somewhere.

*The permit is free and gives you and a limited number of people a two hour window to reach the summit. You’ll need your passports to get the permit and to be let on to the route toward the summit. Not that it’s another country or anything. However, it is really high. So you won’t be catching us up there, view or no view.

Actually some days up El Teide there won’t be a view anyway, but it will still be fantastic. The clouds! That warm trade wind that blows in the direction of Tenerife creates an almost permanent inversion, which means there’s often a layer of cloud at about 3000 feet, which has become known as Tenerife’s ‘cloud sea’ because that’s what it looks like. You’ll be free to explain this to your friends of course and might also want to add that an inversion is a stratum of hydroscopic nuclei (you could just say ‘bits’) trapped by a layer of warm air.

You can fly direct from the UK to Tenerife in about 4 hours and 20 minutes. The airports are all geared up for international traffic and attract no particular need to warn you about regular delays or lack of facilities. There’s no reason not to visit Tenerife!
