Hotels in Gran Canaria – twenty climates? A sartorial challenge!

Gran Canaria has an amazing variety of ‘climates’ - twenty in all. Why? Because the landscape’s so varied. At the island’s centre there’s a snow covered volcano from which you can just see the hot beaches below, in the far distance. A strange feeling. Take warm clothes if you’re heading volcano-wards as it’s really cold up there! What about hotels in Gran Canaria? Well, you can’t move for hotels along the coast but you’ll be hard pressed to find many inland. The Five Star Melia Las Palmas Hotel overlooks the Playa de las Canteras beach, a short walk from the shops and city centre. A huge place, the Melia Las Palmas has 234 rooms, a café and a couple of good bars, a pool, restaurant and room service. Phew.

Gran Canaria Hotels – Lively nightlife and great golf

Gran Canaria hotels mostly face the beach. And some of the beaches are spectacular. Maspalomas has some of the best beaches in the Canaries and Playa de Ingles offers lively nightlife if you want it. The elegant Apolo Hotel Canaria is a short trot from the beaches at Playa del Ingles and Maspalomas, and the promenade is within spitting distance (if you can spit 150m, that is). All rooms have balconies and the views across the sea are amazing. Plus an amazing range of facilities. It’s almost a mini-town; there’s a restaurant, beauty salon, babysitters, a gym, laundry, pool, sauna, shops and tennis court. I could go on… and on.

Hotels in Gran Canaria – Sun and fun in historic Las Palmas

Gran Canaria’s capital, Las Palmas, has a chequered history dating back to the 1400s. Almost half a million people live there, so it’s by far the Canaries’ biggest city. Enjoy the architecture, shopping, bars and restaurants. Or forget all that nonsense, drink beer and lie on the beach instead. The Astoria hotel sits right in the middle of Las Palmas, almost on top of the Las Canteras beach. Like many hotels in Gran Canaria this is a biggie, with 312 rooms on five floors, both singles and doubles. Like many of the bigger hotels in Gran Canaria, the Astoria has an impressively long list of on site facilities. You could spend your whole holiday there, not moving more than a few feet for days and days. Lazy? Yes. But who cares. You’re on your holidays!

Here are just some of the hotels and resorts we sell in Gran Canaria

Cheap Gran Canaria Holidays -  Nature at its Best

As Gran Canaria demonstrates, a Canary Islands holiday offers much more than sun, sea, and sand. Forests, exotic plants and animals, desert features, mountains, volcanic craters, even snow on the higher peaks sometimes! Along with all that there is the most exciting capital city in the Canary Islands and wonderful beaches all round the island’s fabulous coastline.  The largest water park in the Canary Islands is here, near to Maspalomas, it’s AquaSur, and comes complete with wave pool, slow river, the hammocks. Lots of fun for adults and children alike. It’s open all year round. AquaSur is a dolphin free area.

Cheap Holidays in Gran Canaria -  So Many Attractions

There are more sedate parks and places to discover, some right in the heart of Las Palmas, which is the bustling city of Gran Canaria and the most exciting city in all the Canary Islands. There’s an abundance of Spanish way of life here though, it’s a city with almost 600 years of history and hasn’t shrugged off much of that typically Spanish tradition. Gran Canaria holidays ofer something for everyone.

Bargain Holidays in Gran Canaria - Great Resorts

Each resort in Gran Canaria offers something for everyone.  They all have a mix of quiet areas with beautiful attractions, and a range of bars, restaurants and nightclubs.  Maspalomas and Puerto Rico are good bases for quiet family breaks, while hotels in Playa Del Ingles and Las Palmas are closer to the main nightlife. In both locations you can find bargain package holiday deals for Gran Canaria. There’s so much to see on Gran Canaria that you’ll never run out of things to do in two or even three weeks. The dramatic coast line would take this long to explore alone.

Flights to Gran Canaria – Several climates in one place

Apparently Gran Canaria is sometimes called a miniature continent. Why? The island’s wide variety of landscapes and unusual geology mean the weather can change within a few miles. It isn’t an enormous island and it can feel pretty weird going from scorching heat to snow within a few thousand feet. Flights to Gran Canaria land you on a pretty island of just under 800,000 people, all of whom must – we reckon – be sartorially challenged most of the time coping with the climate. Gran Canaria Airport is Spain's fifth busiest and the busiest in the Canaries. A massive 10 million passengers spread across almost 115,000 flights took flights to Gran Canaria throughout 2007, two million of whom then headed for Lanzarote, Tenerife and Fuerteventura.

Gran Canaria Flights – 130 miles from North Africa

Gran Canaria is out in the Atlantic Ocean, 130 miles or so from North West Africa. Flights to this hot little place depart from a whole load of UK airports covering England, Scotland, Eire, Ireland and Wales. Gran Canaria flights leave from Aberdeen, Belfast, Cardiff, Birmingham, Doncaster, Gatwick, Dublin London Luton, Norwich, Nottingham and Stanstead. So no matter where you’re leaving from, you’ll find a suitable airport close or close-ish to home.

Flights to Gran Canaria – An island hopping paradise

Gran Canaria is the third largest Canary Island and probably the one with the most variety. If you’re into wildlife and landscapes, choose flights to Gran Canaria and grab the opportunity to explore a sumptuous island paradise of massive, smooth sand dunes, volcanic mountain country, uber-green lush plantations and quaint little villages. Love island hopping? Flights to Gran Canaria are ideal; book a Las Palmas ferry trip and cross the ocean to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Puerto Rosario, Morro Jable, Santa Cruz de la Palma, Arrecife and Cadiz.

Palmitos Park – Gran Canaria Attractions – The Canary Islands

This is a big ornithological park, aquarium, and butterfly house. It’s not far on a bus, wherever you’re staying and an interesting trip too. There are loads of parrots here – over 1000. A day well spent. Unless you suffer from Ornithophobia of course (fear of birds) in which case it would be the stuff of nightmares.

Mundo Aborigen – Attractions in Gran Canaria – The Canary Islands

This is an Aboriginal theme park. Yes, that’s right, an Aboriginal theme park. Before you dismiss it out of hand, it’s in a lovely spot overlooking a big gorge, which is a little tiny bit grand canyon-like in its magnificence. Why’s there an aboriginal museum on Gran Canaria? Because the ‘Guanches’ as they are called locally lived here first and were here when the first Europeans arrived.

No one really knows where they came from, although a translation of Guanches is:

Guan = Person
Chinet = Tenerife

You’d think that might have given them a clue...

Sioux City – Gran Canaria Attractions – The Canary Islands

Many cowboys from America’s wild west made the pilgrimage to Gran Cananaria in the early 19th century to learn gun slinging and cattle wrangling skills from the few remaining Guanches, so a wild west theme park was developed in the mid 1970s. Today it’s one of the island’s most popular attractions.

Others might have you believe that the Wild West theme park is here because a film company made a movie on Gran Canaria in 1972 and the locals liked the set so much that they kepx it! We both know what the real reason for Sioux City is though don’t we? There are bank robberies and duels here every day, so if you’re from South London and feeling homesick…

Puerto de Mogan – Attractions in Gran Canaria – The Canary Islands

Puerto de Mogan is to the west Puerto Rico, and known locally as the Venice of Gran Canaria. Part of it is even called ‘Little Venice’, but so is part of London W2 and that isn’t particularly Venice like either. However, it is a lovely place, with deep sea fishing and a submarine you can go on trips on. Yes, it is yellow.

Cueva de los Cuatro Puertas – Gran Canaria Attractions – The Canary Islands

There are lots of caves here that hark back to the days of the aboriginal inhabitants of Gran Canaria known as the Guanches. Have a wander around the caves and who knows what long undisturbed aboriginal spirits you’ll stir up.

Puerto de las Nieves – Attractions in Gran Canaria – The Canary Islands

Puerto de las Nieves is a lovely little city that, up until a few years ago was famous for a rock formation in the sea called Dedo de Dios, which means ‘God's finger’. However, this was storm ravaged recently and much to the horror of the locals, completely destroyed! Don’t say anything or make any holy finger-based jokes, no matter how tempxing. It had been there for millions of years and now it’s gone, thanks to tropical storm ‘Delta’.

Playa de Amadores – Gran Canaria Attractions – The Canary Islands

There’s a popular beach here and the sand is lovely and white. Far more so than the sand elsewhere on the island, it looks like somewhere in the Caribbean in fact. That’s because the sand was shipped in from the Caribbean. We hope they asked – and that there isn’t a beach load of tourists in the Caribbean standing scratching their heads looking at where the sand should be. At Beat the Brochure we’ve made a mental note to make it our business to discover what’s under the sand next time we visit a beach. A bucket and spade might well be in order.

It’s a 4 hour and 15 minute flight from the UK, depending on where you’re flying from of course. Transfers should take no more than 40 minutes and as little as 20, depending on where you’re staying of course.
